End of another era....

Walmart announced that it will stop selling CD's....

Oddly enough, I heard not long ago that vinyl records are making a comeback ? Of course I remember them well, have many, but no longer even have a turntable, got rid of my cassette player & my 8-track player....

I do remember the short lived 4-track...but never owned one

But think I will hold on to my CD player. I have a decent collection of them, and they appear not to wear so?

We have a lot of music CDs, we also make our own mixes to take when we go camping, we have a small AA battery operated player with speaker built in. My photos on my computer are saved to CDs also, so I don't plan to stop using them or getting rid of my players. I heard on the news that Best Buy was discontinuing them also. Netflix will probably be phasing them out quickly, my husband has a subscription with them, they come via regular mail.

I imagine they will still be available to buy online?

What is the next latest & greatest BTW???

I still have many of my old vinyl records and have kept my turntable. Not to mention over 1000 CD's that my husband and I amassed through the years.

But I think all of these hardware-oriented forms of music will become a thing of the past. It's all going to be software, downloaded to devices like phones and ipods. People will be able to keep their music collections on the "cloud." I guess the next generation will be traveling a lot lighter than we did.

In an impulsive house cleaning I recently got rid of all my records and the turntable. I usually download from itunes or purchase a CD from AMAZON if the CD is significantly cheaper. Yeah less clutter!

We have all the vinyl and turntable and many CD's also. My husband holds on to many
things as he's convinced we will have some man-made or natural disaster and we'll all be living like high class cave people.
Yes survivalists listening to Don Henley and Billy Joel records eating ramen noodles. That's us. Not sure we'll have electricity so glad we still have all the board games just in case.

.

But it is my era, so I am still playing my vinyl records, CDs and DVDs. As I grew older my keeping up with ever-changing technology had definitely waned.

My VHS player died in a lightening strike last year. Then I discovered VHS players are no longer manufactured [they are only sold now on the secondary used market.]

I bought a back-up DVD player while I still can.

I've got quite a collection of vinyl, CD's, and tapes...going back into the 1970's. I still have a Sansui 9090DB tuner/amp (120w per channel) and a pair of big Realistic (radio shack) speakers that can really rattle the windows if I crank it up. That, plus dozens of VCR tapes, and DVD's spanning decades. Everything still works good. Some of that old stuff is gaining in value....The 9090DB I bought in the early '70's, for perhaps $400, now sells for $1200+ on EBAY.

It seems that in today's world, everything has to be accessed through a Smart Phone...and those users have no idea of what "sound quality" is all about.

BTW, I think it is Best Buy that is stopping sales of CD's...not Walmart....and the times I've stopped at a Best Buy in the past couple of years, their stores seem half empty...both in terms of merchandise and customers. It wouldn't surprise me to see Best Buy join the ranks of retailers who are going out of business.

No, the report I watched specifically said Walmart....but I'm sure others have, or will be stopping as well.

I have a bunch as well,...not sure of the number?

But just think [or don't] that each one of those was about $12.00-15.00 ? adds up quickly....

I've always been sorry that the vinyl records were largely made obsolete by the CD's. The reason: a lot of the vinyl record covers were real works of art. Even if the same illustration shows up on a CD, it doesn't
exactly have the same impact on a 5" by 5" box.

I'm just not an appreciate'r of art I suppose ? So I'll just trust your eye on that one <grin> But! many say the sound quality is [record] better [CD better] ? Here again I don't think my senses are acute enough to argue.

I do appreciate & like, the convenience of the CD's much more...

Speaking of living in a different era...

I get lots of scam emails. Yesterday I received a scam in my snail mail and today I received a scam phone call.
My recorder only caught part of the phone scam... something about the service on my windows will suddenly stop.
I had to laugh, thinking what would a 1960s me think about "service on my windows suddenly stopping."

That's one of the reasons why I kept many of my vinyl records.

A few of them also have posters that originally came inside the record album.
