Overview of La Befana

La Befana is a beloved figure in Italian folklore, often depicted as a witch-like old woman who brings gifts to children on the night before the Feast of the Epiphany, January 5th. Her story is intertwined with both Christian and pagan traditions, making her a unique character in Italian culture.

The Legend

Origin of the Story

According to legend, La Befana was a kind-hearted old woman who lived alone. When the Three Wise Men passed by her home on their way to find the baby Jesus, they asked for directions. Although she initially declined their invitation to join them, she later regretted her decision and set out to find them. Unfortunately, she lost her way and has been searching for the Christ Child ever since.

Annual Tradition

Every year on January 5th, La Befana flies through the night sky on her broomstick, delivering gifts to well-behaved children and leaving coal or cinders for those who have been naughty. Children hang stockings or shoes by the fireplace, hoping to find them filled with sweets and small toys the next morning.
