No, but I’m conjuring up an image of a contingent of guys clad in motorcycle garb. Their boots are lined up like soldiers in front of their chairs like soldiers, while they move and groove in their white sox, duck tails a flyin’, to tunes of the day.

Yes. We had some great times. Thank the Lord that we didn't have cell phones back then. That would have been a terrible distraction.

Oh, yeah. Our class put one on every Saturday. I had a huge collection of 45s, so I DJed. The reason for a "sock" hop was they varnished the gym floor in September, so they could play basketball in the gym. Shoes would have marred the floor, so we had to only be in sock feet to save the cost of revarnishing.

I was raised in Houston in the 50s and 60s before moving to Oklahoma city. Houston Park system had several large indoor facilities that there were sock hops, usually on a basketball court which is why the term sock hop became known.. I saw BJ Thomas at one when he was a youngster.

Yes, Jr. High and High School .... Friday nights were Sock Hop nights!

I went to an all Girl's Catholic school but was lucky enough to go to dances at the all Boy's Catholic high school every Saturday nights. I loved it and it brings back wonderful memories to me,The dances were in the Gym and the priest would check under your shoes to make sure nothing would scratch their floor.

Yes, there were a lot of them during high school. My steady was a lousy dancer. She barely moved so I danced with other girls and it was OK with her.

This thread brought back many memories to me. This song was one of my favorites until the Priest said we were dancing too close to one another.

Our priest banned this one when the heard the lyrics:

"Bertha Lou, Bertha Lou
Wanna conjugate with you" :)

Hey, maybe the singer was just discussing his wish to study with his honey for the Latin exam.:giggle:

You reminded me of when the "Twist" came out. We were forbidden to do it. So the boys would form a circle so the Priest couldn't see the couples doing the twist. We were also forbidden to sneak behind the Bleachers !

Dancing was considered a sin in the church I attended as a kid. Sock hops were about ten years before I would have been old enough to attend. I remember trying the Twist with a girl friend (who attended the same church) - in the "safety" of her living room. She told me to just pretend I was swishing a towel side to side across my bottom.

Gee whiz, what was more innocent than the Twist?
