Ever Been Thrown in the Clink?

I have and it wasn't fun. It was a misunderstanding and I was released.

Part of my late Brother's wedding speech...

"Mom raised us well. None of us have ever been in jail, and we can all play the piano!" (y)

When I was 17, in 1971, I was arrested with two friends in nightclub called The Bank on Main Street in Cortland, N.Y. for drinking underage.

Not exactly public enemy number one but my parents did have to come and collect me.

Later, I had to appear at a hearing before the state ABC board and make a statement about our purchases, who served us, etc…

Cortland is a college town and apparently this particular club was under surveillance for repeatedly serving minors which was precisely why we were there! 😉🤭😂

My husband got arrested for nude sunbathing at Lady Jayne Beach, where many people sunbathed naked. He had to appear at court and the Judge taking the case suddenly recognised my husband because the Judge was a sunbather there as well. The Judge dismissed the case saying, "Insufficient evidence". This was back in the late 50's. They had a good laugh afterwards.

I went to undergrad at SUNY Cortland, @Aunt Bea. :) But I'm far more devoted to my second alma mater, the University of Missouri.

As to this thread: Yes, I was thrown into jail once. The charges were dropped. My ex didn't bail me out for nearly 3 days. I don't care to get into details because that was a very, very dark time in my life.

Never been thrown into the clink, but over the years I've been visiting historic gaols - Melbourne gaol where Ned Kelly was hung, Freemantle gaol (WA), Trial Bay, Berrima and Dubbo in NSW. I have also visited the Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney with a social worker to talk to an inmate. It was a pastoral care visit and we brought him some home made biscuits. He was about to be deported but was quite cheerful about it.

Back in 1988.
I was staying with a friend in Shepparton, Victoria and having a few drinks at the local watering hole. 200km north of Melbourne.
That weekend, the Melboune police sent a "Flying Squad" (so called because they in and out within 24 hours), to Shepparton in an attempt to "clean up" the city which was having crime and alcohol problems.
As I exited the toilet I accidently bumped into one of the cops. (I was a tad inebriated)
"Right, you're coming with us"
I spent the night in the lock up, without being charged, and they kicked me out at 6am.

Those were the days when the police arrested drunks and kept them overnight in the watch house for their own safety. Most were harmless as well as defenceless.

No, but I once flounced out of a school party because the boy I was with was flirting with another girl. The police pulled over and asked me where I was going at midnight. I said, "Just up the street." A few minutes later they passed me again and asked me just exactly where I lived. I told them the truth and it was 4 miles "up the street." So they gave me a ride home and scared my parents to death when they pulled up the drive.

This thread is making me think about how much safer life used to be for silly teenagers.

Yep, several times, for several things. Got to a point I was a regular in the system. Even spent a year in county jail. Final straw was my last charge where I got a half million dollar cash bond. I got out of that one and straightened up. That was 20 years ago.

Once. About 33 years ago.

I got pulled over at 3am, (on my way home from work) for not using my turn signal.

After running my license, it was discovered I had an unpaid fine ($26), for failure to come to a complete stop at a right turn on red.

I can't remember if I was arrested or not, I wasn't handcuffed, and I rode in the front seat of the police car.

I spent six hours in a cell. Ended up paying the court cost ($90), the original fine ($26), and the towing fee ($190).

Ironically, the police officer never wrote me up for the turn signal violation.
