I have done this on a small scale many times and had fun. Anyone else tried it? :)

"Yesterday morning, I put a set of folding shelves, a stainless steel trash can, and a smaller plastic trash can at the end of our driveway with signs that said, "FREE". I went inside to get more stuff to give away. When I returned 15 minutes later, a woman was hauling the trash cans away on her bike. The shelves were already gone".

Not a FREE SALE, but the same thing. Where I live people put out pieces of unwanted or broken furniture, etc., left over small building supplies like odd lumber, fencing, shelving, any household items they don't care to hang on to for a future yard sale. .. with most things needing some fixing or painting or something. They put these things out by the curb on Thursday nights. People know this and come around in pickup trucks and collect whatever they want the night before trash pickup shows up in the morning. Most stuff is gone before morning.
I've given away things that way, and I've also collected a few things around the neighborhood that way too.

.. 'one man's junk is another man's treasure'. .. :D

When we were selling our home we had 2 yard sales to de-clutter for staging, we set anything we didn't want to keep at the curb. It would be gone within 2-3 hours. One time we had an old tattered mattress and box springs. Three young boys (12-13 YO) stopped and asked if they could haul it home. My wife said the deal is if you take it you can't bring it back. They loaded them on 2 of their skate boards and happily pushed them home. One can only wonder how their mother reacted.

I've put things outside by the sidewalk with a Free sign, and they go quickly. Lots of times I put something out with the trash for pickup, and it's gone by the time the garbage man comes in the morning, lol.

Now and then we place items we now longer need but which are still useable in front of our house with a FREE sign on it. Examples are a queen size mattress, a 2 door filing cabinet and piles of chopped wood from large eucalyptus trees that we had to remove from our property. Most people knock on the front door to make sure it is OK to take the items away.

I have also done that , especially when I was moving, and there were things that didn't sell at the yard sale, or on Craigslist, and we just needed them to be gone before we moved.
We have also checked around the neighborhood, looking to see what was being put out for the taking before the garbage trucks arrived the next day.
We brought home some used lumber, which my husband was able to use to make himself two nice sawhorses for when he is working on a project and needs them.
We also brought home a twin bed headboard and footboard, and he made that into a cute little bench for the front yard.
I think this is a great idea that helps out everyone ! There is a website called "freecycle" which is just for giving things away, or asking for something that you need. You go to the website, and then find the freecycle group for your town/city.
Craigslist also has a place for free items, and it is good to list things there, too.

Neat lil' bench he made! :)

Thats what I do Freecycle.. your trash is someone else`s treasure and its great to be able to help others..
I have put kitchen items in a box I didn`t need and people ring and want to come collect it .. also a single bed
ensemble.. there is always some one in need.. :)

No signs needed here. Just put the item next to trash at driveway and good chance someone will take. If not, garbage truck hauls it off.

I put out a torn sofa and loveseat set at 11PM for next day trash pick up at 7,it was gone by 6am.

I saw a real good clean teen desk set that was put out by those moving out. "Gonna grab that one as soon as I pick up the prescription" a mile away.

It was gone 30 minutes later....chit!!!!!

The stuff I give away isn't trash, I could sell it, but that is too much hassle, I prefer to give it away for free.

We gotta be faster on these neighborhood scavenger hunts.. lol ....

One day on my morning walk, I came across a dogloo sitting out by a curb:

I was going to grab it on my way back home ... too late!!!

And I agree with Bullie, no signs are ever needed around here either.
