Ever Had A Xanax?

Ok, I put this in the Health section of the forums, because I couldn't figure out where I should put it.

As most everyone knows, I had knee replacement surgery a little over a month ago. Recovery has been going well. The only trouble I have is sleeping.

If I get two hours at a time, that's a lot. When I fall asleep, it doesn't take long for my knee to start aching from being in the same position for any extended period of time.

It was to the point of exhaustion. I was desperate for some 'good sleep'. So, I asked my wife "Do you have anything I can take to get some sleep?"

So, she gave me 1/2 a Xanax.

Literally, 18 hours later, I woke up and I felt well rested, if not a bit woozy.

Needless to say, I won't be doing that again.

I keep a little on hand to handle panic attack emergencies. Thankfully those are now extremely rare, but even then I'll take 1/4, 1/8, or even 1/16th of a tablet. I don't are whether it's placebo effect at that point. It seems to work.

This is something my doctors aren't anxious to prescribe any more. Oddly though, a lot of women seem to be able to get them by the bagful. What's up with that?

I'm not really seeing a question in that post @Dave03... but I'm glad that you finally got some rest!
I sometimes go through sleeping difficulties, for various reasons, and I understand what lack of sleep, over extended periods can do.
I actually think that you made a good choice... sincerely.

I don't like giving medical advice but along with what I've already said, I just wanted to say that Xanex comes in several dosages. I've never heard of it ever causing some to sleep 18 hours, plus have wooziness that long after... but everyone's body is different, so okay...
If you continue having sleep issues, I'd encourage you to relay to your doc what you shared here and ask for their input on it all.

My doctor prescribed Clonazepam (in the same family as Xanax). The RX label says "use sparingly" and the doctor told me not to take it every day; only when / if I feel like I may be having a panic attack. But the thing is, it takes 1-2 hours to start working, so that's not very helpful, and I seldom use it because I want to be mentally alert. It makes no difference in my sleep.

I've just looked up what the name is in the UK..Diazepam.. there is no way that Diazepam would take my pain away... or knock me out for 18 hours I take 10mg every night to be able to get a few hours sleep...

I hope your pain starts to ease Dave.., no fun being in Pain..

... my right knee is killing me right now.. I saw a Consultant in January who said he was refer me to a colleague for surgery.. still not heard anything

A month seems like a long time to still have knee discomfort. But of course that only Doctor Fuzzybuddy's opinion. I'd give your knee doc a call. He/'she is the one with the solution. BTW, Dave03, you didn't mention if you were on any pain medication? Have you tried tylenol at bedtime?

I’ve got a prescription for clonazepam also. They are like lorazepam but much, much stronger. I only use them about once every two months.. They take about 20 minutes to work for me so if I am panicking, they can definitely prevent a panic attack from spiraling out of control.

I thought diazepam was valium. I used to take them when necessary, and I've also taken xanax for sleep.

Xanax in the US is Alprazolam and Valium is Diazapam. I find it hard to believe that 1/2 tablet of Xanax would knock someone out for 18 hours, much less get rid of pain. Both drugs are from the same family along with a plethora of others and are primarily muscle relaxers. This, in turn reduces anxiety reactions in a patient. Dosages play a large role in how it affects one's body. But, one would hardly have an anesthetic dosage in their home.

That's where a CPM (continuous passive motion) machine comes in handy after knee surgery. It keeps your knee moving while you sleep, gradually increasing the degree of flex. You don't wake up with a locked-up knee.

My daughter used one after she blew out her knee via a skiing accident. It really helped her heal.
