Ever Killed an Animal that was not an Insect?

The animals that were not insects that I ever killed were small lizards, mice and fish and what looked like small beige, Daddy Long Legged spiders.

As a country boy I've killed countless birds and animals. Some were domestic animals for food, some game for food, some were vermin and some were euthanized.

Vermin? Yikes! I forgot to mention that I set traps and poisions for mice and that should be counted as well.

I imagine that deer and cattle were the ones over1000 pounds,-right?
What, you've never had Elephant Stew? (if you feel the urge to yell at me for being off topic, I'm not... just answering your question!) :sneaky:

Elephant Stew
1 medium elephant
2 (50 gallon) containers broth
500 lbs assorted fresh vegetables, chopped
2 rabbits (optional)

Cut elephant into bite-size pieces. This takes about 2 months.
Using large kettles, simmer equal parts elephant and vegetables with enough broth to cover.
Cook for a couple days.
If more are expected add the rabbits, but do this only if necessary. Most people don't like to find hare in their stew.

Never had it. Indian or African elephant?

I used to hunt small game and deer. I only ate the deer. I gave my neighbors the rabbits and pheasants. Pheasants are few and far between where I live now. I think between the foxes and strays, they have been pretty much wiped out.

I still remember as a boy hearing the pheasants in the corn fields. They weren’t hard to locate. My neighbors looked forward to what I would bring home. I also shared my venison. Nothing was killed for pleasure and let lay. All the meat was used.

My dad and I used to help the local butcher to cut up the meat after we cut off the carcass. We didn’t do the killing. The butcher did that.

When I was younger I did a fair bit of hunting. Deer and moose as big game. I never got lucky enough to shoot a moose but shared in what our camp got. I like moose better than deer. Back in the day fox and coyote pelts were worth good money in the fur market. It declined badly some years ago but it sounds like the Chinese and Russian market is bringing prices up again.
Local farmers used to like to see us shooting ground hogs. Their holes are hard on livestock and equipment.
I used to go fishing quite often as a kid as well.

Yes...unfortunately.. but I live in the deep countryside and surrounded by dense woodland, so when I'm driving through the woods as I have to , to get most places.. often a Pheasant or rabbit or squirrel will run out, and there's no way to avoid them... it's absolutely sickening when that happens..

Did I understand you right? You went hunting but let the butcher do the killing?

No never. I’ve had dogs euthanized. They were in pain and I put their needs above my own feelings. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Except for flies and mosquitoes I’ve never killed anything. My husband has killed mice and fish. I’m a huge animal lover so am sensitive to them.

Another person’s post reminded me that I once hit a cat with my car accidentally and felt horrible about it even to this day. I may have hit the odd mouse or squirrel while driving but none that I know of. They run across the road in front of the cars.

I never ate moose nor deer, so I have no idea about taste or texture differences. I imagine both are lean meat since both are wild and in good physical shape. Right?

I also used to fish at Newark New Jersey's Branchbrook Park's lake, but stopped when a fish swallowed a small hook and I could not pull it out. I kept imagining the unnecessary agony I had inflicted, and that was it.

Hit some with car. This can't always be avoided when they suddenly dash out.
Very true.

During my drive from Boston Mass to Miami Florida, I saw many a road-kill.
