Ever put something in a safe place and forget the safe place?

What if ... one day you said "Alexa", and the response was "Who is Alexa"? One wonders what happens when these things start getting old, low on batteries, etc. :)

If you just say, "Alexa," the device waits for a command. But once, just for fun, I said, "Alexa, thank you." She said, "Of course." That was unexpected. I did it again, and she said, "You're welcome." So she's programmed to have some variety.

If I say, "Alexa, play something nice," she chooses something that I will like. I guess she stores my musical preferences in her memory, and has an algorithm to make selections accordingly. Amazing, and kind of creepy.

tbel, she doesn't run on a battery, at least, I don't think so. I have "her" plugged into the wall, same as an electric light.

One time when I was at Best Buy, there was a demo table set up with Alexa on it. I asked if Alexa would play ANY music on demand, and the guy said it would. I said Alexa, play David Qualey. Sure enough, Alexa found this, and played it:

I thought that would be a rather obscure request since nobody I have talked to has ever heard of Qualey. I was impressed and started asking the guy questions with the idea of maybe getting one. I found out that after you buy Alexa, you have to pay for music and as I recall, there were other goodies that cost. I decided against the purchase because I could just see being "nickel an dimed" once they got their hooks into me.

That may no longer be true, or maybe that is now a part of the goodies you get with Amazon Prime, or maybe that has become an acceptable way of life, I don't know. I do think that Alexa is a good idea and seems to be well executed though.

It isn't that I don't spend money, but instead that I am careful to spend it on things that Have lasting value for me. We all have different value systems, so I would never say that something like Alexa is a bad thing to spend money on.

I don't pay anything extra for music. But I am a Prime member, maybe that's why.
