OAKLAND (KPIX) — Is a cell tower going up in your neighborhood? If it’s not now, it may soon.
Wireless carriers are installing millions of them across the country to enable the new, faster 5G cellphone technology. While many are looking forward to faster cell service, many are also asking: Are there legitimate health concerns?

That question is keeping John Hiestand up at night. Outside his bedroom window he can see a new pole where Verizon will soon install a next-generation cell tower.

“This would be a big tower generating lots of RF outside of our bedroom window 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for many years,” he said.

It’s called a “small cell” or “distributed antenna system.” The industry says they’re safe. Many in Piedmont aren’t convinced – including the Hiestands.

“Our daughter is a cancer survivor,” John Hiestand explained.

Wireless carriers are constructing cell towers a stronger, faster 5G network, but some experts warn that the updated service's health effects are unknown and potentially dangerous.


Today, there are 154,000 cell towers in the US, according to wireless communication association, CTIA. By 2026, it estimates another 800,000 will be needed to support 5G.


The network update will bring more Americans into closer proximity with milimeter waves, very short-wave radiation.


Research on cell phone radiation has yielded mixed findings, but some studies have linked older wireless service generations to cancers of the heart and reproductive organs, and 5G's health effects have hardly been studied.

The amount towers and dishes keep on increasing. My wireless router makes me nervous let alone a high powered transmitter. I've seen residents fight towers for years/decades but the demand for wireless services took a lot of fight out of people. Theyre ugly let alone a potential hazard. I've also seen communities fight dishes now they are all over.

Alot of people don't realize a residential neighborhood is supposed to be residential, not commercial. The same communities also now allow the parking of commercial vehicles with signage parked on public streets over night which they never allowed before. All ladders were to be removed and signs covered. Too many never experienced a strictly residential neighborhood. They think everything is mixed use. 'A tower? Oh that's what it is, I thought it was there all along.'
 
Exposure to RF energy may well become a substantial health issue in the future. Presently, there are studies quietly being conducted that are concerned about long term exposure to this energy. The CWA union has already warned its workers to be Very Careful when working around these facilities.

When I was in the USAF, we had big radar mockups in the shop, to test the components after repair, and we were Always cautioned to Never venture near the antenna when the radar was transmitting....severe burns, etc., within seconds. When I was in Thailand, the huge Praying Mantis would gather on the windows in front of the mockups, and when we transmitted the radar, it would kill these big bugs within seconds.

There is a real possibility, that sometime in the future, brain damage and mental issues will be connected to excessive cell phone use. Spending hours with a cell phone in close proximity to the brain most certainly increases the RF exposure to the brain cells. We may already be seeing the early results of this activity with the increasing number of people who are showing "erratic" behavior.

Given the often "erratic" performance of cell phones, if these towers were responsible for controlling cars, driving could become very hazardous. Any momentary glitch, static, or loss of signal could spell an instant car wreck...imagine being in heavy traffic, or doing 70mph on the highway, and the signal gets garbled...

LOL...what's the old story?...we have to crawl before we walk.

The control for these cars needs to come from somewhere...the towers are already there.....just a thought.
