Excitement in the village?

Very little ever happens here, so when something does, people turn out to see what it's all about. My house is fairly soundproof although occasionally we hear helicopters going to / from the oil rigs. This morning I heard a helicopter obviously flying lower than usual so I looked outside and there was an air ambulance helicopter moving slowly over my neighbours house. It eventually landed on the village playing field, watched by most of the village.

Not sure what the emergency was, but two ordinary ambulances also appeared. I hope that nobody has been taken seriously ill or injured, but it was obviously enough to require the air ambulance.

Less frequently, we see RAF jets flying low over the nearby fields and once a Hercules transport plane flew very low over the length of the village main street before climbing. It was surprisingly quiet.

That's the excitement over for another while. As I said, very little ever happens here.

I love the quiet solitude of where I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The US Navy has a base maybe 200 miles to the east, and on occasion, they train right over my head shattering the silence doing low flight maneuvers over mountainous terrain. Usually, it's fighter jets, but sometimes more lumbering transport or surveillance craft. I think they choose the area as a courtesy to others, because it's a low density population.

They suddenly come out of nowhere, and then they are gone. You can hear them leaving for a few seconds, but you don't hear them coming. It's a loud overwhelming sound that gives me goosebumps and rattles my whole body. If I happen to be outside, I sometimes catch a glimpse if I look up in time, but if I look in the direction of the sound, they are way past that location, and you miss them.

My dog takes an interest too, but he just looks up in curiosity, while I'm excited and impressed. It's a noise I look forward to and a rare experience today. When I was a little kid in Chicago, I once saw a cowboy pilot doing barrel rolls over the city. I'm guessing they get court marshaled for that today. It was one of one of those early jets, the kind that didn't yet have sweptback wings, but big fuel tanks on its wingtips. I thought that was the way jets were built, and I think maybe they all were once upon a time. I remember being impressed, however.

We live nearby an Air Force Air National Guard (193rd) that flies heavy jets nearby and a few times a year, we may see a few military jets that appear to be fighter jets, which I can’t tell one model from the other.

My neighbor 3 doors away and across the street is still a member of the 193rd as a maintenance mechanic.

I can't tell them apart either, but I think the fighter jets that fly over me are mostly of one kind. Sometimes 5 at a time, but never in close formation. They seem to be chasing each other and flying very low, although I have no idea what they are up to.

I saw something odd once: I'm sitting outside an Applebee's and I see an ambulance pull up. The paramedics get out with a wheeled litter and go into the restaurant.

They come out with a woman on the litter and load her in.

The ambulance pulls away, goes around the building and pulls back up in the original place.

Back doors open, the litter is pulled out and the woman gets off and walks away across the parking lot. Litter is loaded up and ambulance leaves.

I would have loved to hear what  that was all about......

I live near an air force training base and I often hear the jets when they're on their training flights day and night. Also they sometimes do bomb training so we hear occasional large booms.

We hear the Eaglemed air ambulance helicopter when it lands on the roof at the hospital.
