Monday I went for an eye exam & a new glasses.

I took $600 cash with me LOL !!! Boy was I short ..... for one pair of glasses.

Eye health [good] just the slightest sigh of cateracts , vision 20/25 . Exam cost $112,00

Clear , no-line bifocals , frameless $740.00 !!

A second pair in dark tint [sunglasses] [if I choose to] with a second pair discount $540.00

I just am tired of trying {Dr. Walgreens} and still not seeing correctly, and ...... I have a new drivers lisence eye exam coming, as such I want the best shot at passing.

The prices you paid are in line with my eye doctor.

My annual eye exam is covered by my Medicare advantage plan under diabetes management.

I’m due for new glasses this year.

Last year was the first year she mentioned cataracts. I’m curious to see if there has been any change.

I’m thankful that I can afford it, but it does annoy me when I see the advertisements for two pairs of eyeglasses with an eye exam for $79.00. 🦉

WOW! That's terrible! I have a free exam every year through Humana and $300 towards glasses. I usually just get my Rx from the eye doctor and order from Zenni. I've had good results with them and the most I've paid for a pair of glasses (frames included) is less than $100. I get the added coatings, etc. and it's still a bargain.

Check out Payne or Zenni online. My wife and I have both bought several pairs of sunglasses to leave in each of our cars. Been very happy with the functionality, the frames probably aren't as nice as designer frames, but then again they cost a fraction.

The eye doc/office did say would submit the exam cost to medicare for "possible" deduction from the bill at the time of pick-up [approx 2 weeks]

I too have seen those low cost TV ads , but must admit I have never really looked into any of them .... perhaps i should have.

When it comes to my body, I am not "cheap" at all. I really do want the best. I can do without "bling" , I can drive an older vehicle, I can skip a deluxe vacation, etc ..... But I prefer my body perform the best it can ....

I just hope they [new glasses] correct as they should .... and I might go for the sunglasses after I know ?

Glad to hear prices I was quoted were not [crazy] industry wide ..... thanks for sharing .

Quality glasses are always a bit expensive. I tried a pair of these online glasses, a few years ago, and even though I ordered their most expensive frames and lenses, they were still mediocre, at best. Even with vision insurance, I still plan on spending over $500 for a good eye exam, and a good high quality frame and lens.

Designer frames can cost upward of $400, while standard glasses from a company like Pearle Vision can start at around $80. In recent years, the eyewear startup Warby Parker has stepped into the picture, providing an affordable, attractive solution for shoppers, but glasses from Warby Parker still start at $95.

These prices, it turns out, are marked up. Way up.

This week, the Los Angeles Times spoke with two former executives of LensCrafters: Charles Dahan and E. Dean Butler, who founded LensCrafters in 1983. Both admitted that today, glasses are marked up nearly 1,000 percent.

After looking at some of these prices, I am very fortunate to have lifetime eye care insurance which includes 1 new pair of frames per year, two lens changes per year and up to 12 pair of contacts per year. And a free complete eye exam yearly. I don’t know what the value of that amounts to, but my s-i-l just bought two pair of glasses and a complete eye exam totally over 2 grand. I about crapped my pants when she said that. I never imagined eye care was so expensive.

How do some of these elderly people do it with no insurance. I don’t think Medicare pays anything towards glasses do they? This isn’t right in my book. Every senior should have medical, dental and eye care. Am I wrong?

Well, as I said ... they [the eye doc office] are going to submit my exam to medicare , but not sure if it will be covered ? That's $112.00 . A nice break if I can get it.

I, as @Don,M stated tried a more reasonably priced company ..... but never did have good vision using them. And the overall quality was .not-so-much' As such I decided it was time to go for the "better" ? Hope I'm right .

Well, I had my eye exam last week. He had mentioned cataracts 2 years ago but this time he mentioned it again, and that a new prescription and glasses wouldn't be that much help. I said well, let me think about it. So I can get cataract surgery which is good until next August. I just hate the thought of someone touching my eye (this has been years) and the surgery being a week apart.

I don’t understand. Why does it annoy you? Do you think it’s too cheap?

I have to get an exam and new glasses soon. My ins. at work covers exams and equipment. Not sure how much it will cost me. I get the lined bifocals because they're cheaper & I have to be able to see where to look.

MY first pair of glasses when I was 14 cost $14 including the exam. When I went to school I could read the blackboard. They had the practice of putting the tall kids (me) in the back of the room.

Anybody I know that has used Costco eye care centre has been really pleased.
I have been happy with Costco eyeglasses.

Previously I'd always bought my glasses at the eye doctor's office, but the last time I did it was approx $800 just for one pair. I saw online that costco eyeglasses review scores were really high, so two prescriptions ago I bought the Costco membership and got eyeglasses there.

I'd had money withheld at work that year for FSA to use toward new glasses, but the ones from Costco were so much cheaper than the eye doctor that I wound up getting two pair (regular trifocal no-lines pair plus a computer pair) in order to use up the money.

I'll probably always use Costco from now on.

Costco works for us too. Since I'm here, those "2 pair plus eye exam for $79" deals are complete BS and intended just to get you in the door. You will not get 2 pair plus exam for that price unless it is single vision lenses, no coatings, no transition and you have a very limited choice of frames. In other words if you take what no normal person would, then maybe but even then I doubt it. Don...

rpg, you bought your glasses at probably the most expensive place you could find. Next time take your glasses prescription to a Walmart, and other large eye glass stores- get a quote and pick the cheapest. The mark up in eyeglasses is enormous. In some cases, the most expensive part is the metal hinges.

I've been putting off going in for an eye exam, need new
script I'm pretty sure, and having a lot of watery in left eye,
my reason for putting it off is that I lay out all that money for new glasses and then die of heart attack, all that wasted money!!!!!????:p

Colleen, how is the frame fit with Zenni?
I haven't had any problems with fit. You have to know your measurements, like bridge size, arm size, etc., but most important is knowing what your PD (pupillary distance) is. I've always had to ask the person that fits you with glasses to give me the PD number. On Zenni, you can plug those sizes and numbers in to narrow the search and the frames will come up that match.

I see some folks talk about cataracts, and surgery stuff...my
eyes were declared to have cataracts about 25 yrs ago at
a wal mart eye place, and every couple years no matter who I see about eyes they declare cataract and need surgery, yet I
can see okay the way they are....just need a stronger script, and
maybe adjustment in bifocal....I personally think the cataract
crap is just that, crap to make them more money enufffffff......

I get my glasses at the optometrist office. It's the closest place and to take advantage of a Costco or any other dispensary it's 100 mile drive. That's too far for me to go just for an adjustment. I've had to have them with my metal frame glasses and I've had to make 4 and 5 trips when new to get it done properly. I usually get progressives as they work well for me, and cheaper. I always ask about price when getting glasses.
Most I ever paid for a pair was just under $300. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive by a long shot.

When I just had a single vision script I may have tried online, but I wouldn't with a progressive or trifocal script. I have an astigmatism and having my frames adjusted properly is a big deal.

I was having a lot of trouble reading with my last script and the optician I usually work with was on vacation. Since I'd had the glasses for a few days I wound up getting a whole repeat eye exam just to make sure everything was correct. It was all no additional charge and I only had to wait about half an hour. That was the eye doctor's decision, not the optician. That is customer service.

What happened was everything was fine, the script I had was fine and if I was still having trouble my optician would be back on Tue. I didn't get used to them went in on Tues and in about 5 minutes she had me seeing perfectly. Every time I've used a different optician I've not been satisfied. I will now only will work with this optician.
