What an experience! Things like that turn our preconceptions on their heads sometimes.
Poor mummy crocodiles were thought to eat their own young when all they were doing was storing them in their mouths to carry them to a safer pool for them to grow up in. Science didn't discover that, wild life photographers with more guts than brains did.

I don't believe that humans are the only creature who can reason, or have emotions, or that any species above microbial doesn't have a roughly similar range of 'personalities'.

That said, I wouldn't trust that every Leopard Seal would do that nurturing thing either. They are very intelligent and awesome killing machine when the mood takes them. Just as not all lionesses are 'Elsa,' not all Leopard Seals feel a strong need to 'save' a human. He lucked out, big time.

Yeah, well, you dress up like a refugee from Firestone Tire Co. and get in my face with a big, shiny object I'm going to be showing my teeth as well.

Idiot humans - they provoke and they provoke, and then they act all surprised when an animal strikes back at them.

We learn so much from people who risk their lives almost on a daily basis to film and document wild animals in their natural habitat.
