Family Gets 2 Million Dollar Settlement After Daughter Died in Dentist Office

I just heard that the family of a 17 year old who died at the dentist office getting two wisdom teeth extracted finally received a settlement for their loss. I think this is so sad, I've heard other stories too about people dying at the dentist or going into comas due to the administration of general anesthesia for dental work.

General anesthesia is a risky thing, in my opinion. I have had my wisdom teeth pulled many years ago with just a local anesthesia injection in the gum. I would of course get it if I was having an operation in the hospital, many times there's no choice. But I think they are more experienced there to react to a problem than they would be at the dentist.

Honestly, I don't even casually let my pets go under anesthesia unless it's absolutely necessary. We've scaled and cleaned our dogs teeth for decades where they didn't need to be put out at the vets for a cleaning. There are a lot of stories also about pets dying during a dental cleaning.

Did you ever receive general anesthesia for a dental procedure? Did you ever know anyone who had a bad experience with this? I think the most I would ever do is take a pill sedative, and have someone drive me home afterwards.

I've had IV sedation a couple of times for dental procedures as well as the oral / pill sedation......I'm generally kinda out of it with both and can't recall a lot but mama says my head tends to clear and I get back to normal quicker with IV sedation.

So other than being groggy, fuzzy headed and drowsy with both IV and oral, which I suppose are normal reactions, I've not had a bad experience with either.

Good to hear that Ike, guess it also depends on the reputation of the dentist and his staff.

Such a shame Ike, we trust the professionals who we give a LOT of money too for our cleanings and procedures, and they can't come through with basic sterilization....it is hard to trust anyone anymore, they just don't seem to care. :(

At the dentist, I always ask for local. And even for other procedures; if local anesthesiz is available, I prefer it.

I have had it several times, no problems fortunately. No one I've known ever mentioned that they did. I do know it's always a risk however, remembering Joan Rivers for instance. Didn't she die during a routine colonoscopy?

Here's a quote from the AP. I made bold the parts about anesthesiology...

Rivers died in Mount Sinai Hospital, where she had been hospitalized after going into cardiac arrest during an outpatient procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy. At Yorkville, Rivers was
reportedly admitted for a vocal-cord biopsy.

...“doctors performed unauthorized medical procedures, snapped a selfie with the comedian, and failed to act as her vital signs deteriorated.” The lawsuit also claimed that doctors at Yorkville Endoscopy mishandled her procedure, choosing to perform a laryngoscopy on Rivers’s vocal cords, as well. They did not have consent to do so. “The suit claimed that an anesthesiologist expressed concern over what the [laryngoscopy] would do to Rivers’ ability to breathe, but was told she was being ‘paranoid’ by the gastroenterologist performing the endoscopy,” the A.P. reports.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' investigation's are available as to the clinic’s many errors: the clinic did not have properly recorded medication records, the doctors did take selfies, Yorkville hadn’t received informed consent for each procedure doctors performed on Rivers, and the staff hadn’t recorded the comedian’s weight before sedating her.

I prefer Propofol for my dental sedation, which is the same stuff that a patient receives when they have a colonoscopy. Michael Jackson made this drug famous by over-dosing while using it with a combination of other drugs like Valium.

I'm going back to 1967...my Mom had terrible teeth (thanks,Mom),she underwent general anesthesia to have them all extracted in December 1966.
She died of a cerebral hemmorage on January 4,1967.
My Grandma, her Mom,always blamed it on her teeth procedure.
She also had some heart problems and times and medicine were very different.
I wish I knew more but I was 12
