Family history

I don't have any relatives that came from Australia, but I do have a lot of information of my Italian ancestry on my Dad's side of the family. One of my cousins was very curious about our history. He did research back to the 16th century and even visited many of the places in Italy. My Husbands brother also did research on their Irish ancestry. I would love to know more about my Mother's Italian ancestry, but no one on my Mother's side ever was interested in doing it. Maybe someday one of my many cousins would do some searching.

My dad was in an orphanage when he was a kid. Why? I don't have the faintest idea-he never told me why. And I never thought to ask. Plus I always thought I was at his wedding. Again, why??? I'd like to find out about some things. One of the problems is that I have a real common surname. I'm from French Canadian stock and half of Montreal has my name. Half of Quebec has my mom's name.

About four years ago I was chatting with a couple I know, and I knew she was into ancestry -- having done it long before there was an internet. She offered to look into mine so I gave her my mom and dad's sides -- which I only knew about two generations back.

She is a paying member of Ancestry.com and what she found out was amazing. Following my maternal grandmother's maiden name, she followed it back -- unbroken -- to my 26th g-grandfather, born in 1040 AD in England.
