Family of toddler who fell from cruise ship speaks out about cause of death

Yup. A kid fell 11 stories to her death onto a concrete pier. Her grandfather hoisted up to a ledge and she fell out an open window. Of course, the grandfather claims the cruise line is negligent for having an open window, and some believe the grandfather was an idiot. Are both at fault?
Further on in the article, it was reported that a dozen people a year fall off ships. Given that most people aren't really familiar with being on a ship, maybe the cruise lines ought to be more aware of how really stupid people are????

IMO .... By the report I have heard, only the grandfather is at fault here. If it happened as reported? And if so, he should be prosecuted under what ever the law allows/calls for.

As for the 'adult' falls ... I believe alcohol accounts for many of those, and I have little to no sympathy in most of those cases.

I read that the grandfather held the toddler out of the window and she wriggled and he dropped her. ..the story he's come up with to give to the childs' parents, is hardly credible. Saying he thought there was glass between the toddler and the railing when he held her up ..then saying the toddler thought there was glass, because she leant to bang her head on the window.. . really?..a one year old ?... I don't think so.

This is a terrible tragedy, but it's the grandfathers' fault IMO.. and suing the company for negligence is appalling, and typical nowadays of people not taking responsibility for their own actions.

As part of the investigation, it may be a good idea to have Grandpa recreate his version of what happened and video the recreation. Videos can be all too telling, especially when a life has been lost.

Another tragedy turns quickly into a money grab. When did people lose the capacity for personal responsibility?? It was a terrible accident, but the grandfather killed that child.

Again opinion but ..... It's not just lack of responsibility , it's dollar signs in their eyes. Loved one's dead? let's turn them into our cash cow ......It is the way of our new society.

Holding a squirming child is always a challenge, and I can't imagine anyone dumb enough to hold a small child out at arms length so they can "enjoy the view". This Grandfather is 100% to blame for his stupidity, and deserves to be punished. No matter what the law does to him, if anything, he will always have to live with the fact that he caused this tragedy, and his family will suffer forever. No matter what the cruise ship did, or does, the fact remains that "You Can't Fix Stupidity".

The grandfather is, in fact, an idiot! By his own admission, he held the one year old child up to the window. If I was going to let a tiny tot look out an open window, I'd hold him/her up to the window height, but stand four, or more, feet away from the actual window. The grandfather was totally at fault, here, for not checking to see if the window was open or closed, before he hoisted the child up to look out of it. Now, it's becoming a disgusting money grab by the family.

I agree. Grandpa's story sounds fishy to me.

Poor baby, RIP. It sounds to me like the grandfather was careless and at fault. Hopefully like C'est Moi said, there should be some video of the accident. Regardless who was at fault, it won't bring the little girl back, such a shame. :(

I don't see how this could be anything other than negligent homicide on the part of the grandfather.

Probably won’t pass the smell test. This would be more like Involuntary Manslaughter, and even that may be a reach. If and this is a big if, but if Grandpa would be charged and found guilty, the lawsuit is probably dead in the water. OTOH, the filing of the lawsuit this early into the investigation may be a ploy or a way of starting an early defense.

Between Prosecutors, Defense Attorneys, Judges and Juries, the legal system can sure be unpredictable.

I would still like to hear the whole story and, if by chance, anyone took any pictures or a video, those would be helpful also.

Cruise ships from major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean have video cameras focused on almost all of their exterior balconies and windows, not to mention hallways and other public interiors. Given that this ship (Freedom of the Seas) was launched in 2006 and refurbished in 2015, surely there are cameras everywhere.

The story has changed. It did seen odd to me that a competent adult would do such a thing as reported.

The following: I don't know how to put a narrative from news into quotes.

"{Chloe and her grandfather, Sam Anello, were "in the water park on the ship, which is designed for the kids -- kids are meant to be there," said Winkleman. "And there's a whole wall of windows. And the grandfather thought that this window was closed. It turns out, we've come to learn, that ... passengers can open these windows."

"You have a wall of windows with one hidden hole," said Winkleman. Unknowingly, then, the grandfather places Chloe on the wood railing before the wall of windows, believing Chloe will bang on the glass just like she does at her brother's hockey games, "and the next thing he knows, she's gone," said the attorney.

After speaking with the grandfather, who was "crying hysterically," Winkleman said he believes that this was a "preventable incident."
