FANS- not the kind you use to cool off

I used to visit a website for this singer person. It was a busy site full of his fans. I had thought of myself as a 'fan' of this singer until I read the things those other 'fans' said about that guy. I began to view 'fans' as very scary people indeed. It amazed me how many people really felt they knew that guy in a personal way just because they heard him sing. To me it became creepier and creepier. One woman there told me " Oh c'mon surely you have wanted to sleep with him." I was like " Uh no..I just like to hear him sing." It was weird. Most of those people were seriously obsessed with the guy. One married woman even told me she spent 15 THOUSAND dollars on a guitar and had it sent to him. And pity the person who ever joined that site and made any remark showing the least criticism of his music. They ate those alive. The whole 'fan' experience there creeped me out so bad that until now years later I can barely listen to his music.
Another experience was once at a public gathering a celebrity showed up and he was having an autograph signing or something & I had thought it might be nice to get an autograph. People in the crowd went into a weird frenzy mode. After being completely shoved around out of the way by a couple of men I decided I didn't want a darn autograph. The scary thought hit me then that if a crowd behaved this way over some stupid celebrity, how would they behave in a situation like a fire in a theater or something? If fans behave so stupidly or dangerously over celebrities I can't imagine what they would do in a survival situation.
Fans- they can be creepy obsessed scary people. I really wonder what causes that mindset.

The herd instinct can take over in certain situations and it is every beast for themselves as they trample for the autograph or for the exit...

Many fans can be obsessed! Sick! Understandable when you're a young teen - I mean I was 'in love' with Paul McCartney - but that was normal and you grow out of it.

WHAT? You should never admit such a thing. It is unamerican not to, even if you deserted your native shores...

Blunderwoman,

Your post came at an interesting time for me. I've been reading the autobiography of one of the classic rock musicians. Right now he's describing the early days, the young days, the people, the friends, the places, the experiences, and I'm thinking, what a waste. All that money, all that opportunity, and you are hanging out with people who not only sound scary to me, they sound boring. Why?

When my friends and I were younger, and fans, we wanted to hang out with these guys. We were too young to know just what all "hanging out" involved! But even then, given the opportunity, I'd have been bored very quickly, say in the first hour, if it had been spent with some of these guys' then friends. Bored, or terrified.

I had to get a second cup of coffee before my impressions gelled but in response to your post I think that maybe some of the fans you describe are like some of the person's real-life friends. I'm not going to say more because it will come out judgemental of them. But maybe not people I'd want to hang out with.

Way back when I was a cocktail waitress a then famous singer asked me out. I turned him down & he said " Do you know who I am and who you are saying no to?" Blech.. he was just another creeper

Sorry Ralphy but I would call Sir Elton John "The King"...but that's just me...

Fortunately most of the people I have ever been a fan of either have passed on, or are old or obscure enough they wouldn't incite a riot...Mahavishu admirers aren't noted for causing mayhem.

I'm American and I'm not a fan of his. But many of the musicians I am a fan of were/are fans of his, so I guess it's the circle of fandom. :)
