Farmers' Almanac predicts long winter

Farmers Almanac has a pretty good track record on its long range forecasts. I'm waiting for Tic season to end, and milder weather, so I can go out into my forest and harvest a dozen, or so, dead trees to feed our outdoor wood furnace....late Sept, thru early Nov. I've got the chainsaws and logspitter all tuned up.....just need to get rid of the bugs, and get some cooler milder weather.

I don't mind cold winters, we had good warm clothing if needed. I don't like to drive in snow, but I will if I have to go somewhere, unless there's a major snowstorm or blizzard going down. I keep the Jeep Cherokee I use on a daily basis in the driveway, and it has 4 wheel drive, so I don't have to shovel the whole drive, I usually just do the walkway and sidewalk. In serious storms, my neighbor usually gets out his snowblower and does several of our driveways and sidewalks if we haven't gotten to them yet.

My problem is shoveling out my car and moving it when the plow beeps to clear the drive, I so wish I had a garage.

And after you shovel, the plow clears the street and piles the snow right back up behind you, so back to shoveling the driveway. I hate winter!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE might have a hard winter this year because we had such a HOT summer..much hotter than usual...

I love winter it gives me an excuse not to do much outdoors.. but like everyone I hate driving in it. Now I'm retired I don't have to..but poor O/H still works full time and does.

We don't get snow plows here...the roads are not cleared of snow so everyone has to drive on it....very dangerous because of the packed ice under the freshly fallen snow.. and then black ice at night..

We clear our own paths and driveways of course.. but pavements are treacherous..

Believe it or not, the Farmers Almanac is a big seller here in my area. Maybe because we have hundreds of farms in the tri-county area, is the reason why. I remember back while I was in high school and worked on a farm over my summers, there was a copy of the FA in the bathroom and also in the newest barn where there was a small desk, so we could fill out our paperwork.

Some of the guys would poke fun and laugh at some of the things in it and others would almost live by it. Personally, I have found it to be interesting and some of it is good reading. Most of the planting dates that they list are pretty much on target. Does the FA still list the planting dates?

That's us too. I love sitting by a toasty wood stove when it's nasty out. Feel bad for those who have to venture out for work, etc, but, we've paid our dues.View attachment 75285

I like a fire that snaps and crackles. Back when we had our hunting cabin, we had a fireplace in it and we would throw in some fruit or maple wood to make the fire pop. (Snap, Crackle and Pop. Where have I heard that before?)

It's the ice storms that really hurt during a bad winter. ... the ones that take down power lines. ..the relentless winds.
That can turn into a nightmare quickly.

I am lucky that a neighbor plows my drive for me. Just have to do the ramp.
I do not mind the snow if I do not have to go out. I just hate walking and driving on the ice.
I am preparing for long days spent indoors though. I have a pile of books waiting to be read. A list of shows on Netflix waiting to be watched. Just need to find me a craft project to work on and I will be set

Due to this very topic, I am considering a stand-by generator . I have nat/gas so it is doable. We have not had a hard winter in some time, I just fear we are due. And chopping & or hauling wood for the fireplace is now out of the question so .........

Anyone here have one ?

Aunt Bea...the eating season! I've never heard it called that, but it certainly is apt. I love it, too. Mexican potato soup, refried bean soup with cornbread, hamburger veggie soup with onion bread, pork chops with stuffing and apples, ham and scalloped potatoes. Oh, my! The list goes on and on. And the holiday foods! Yum. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it all. And breakfast casseroles that somehow just seem a bit too substantial for hot weather.

Unfortunately, down here we're still at least 6-8 weeks away from weather that's cool enough to tolerate heavy meals. In the meantime, though, this old lady is gathering up a few staples here and there for those yummy cold-weather meals.

I do not, but my neighbor has one. Talked with him about it, he has used it often during power outages. He loves it. Especially for keeping fridge, and impt appliances going

As long as they lived, my grandparents used the farmer's almanac. they ran a loop of string through the hole in the magazine and hung it on a nail just inside their kitchen door.

Thanks ....... For sure if i had one, and it 'kicked-in' I would reduce consumption to only that necessary . But it sure would be nice to keep the furnace going !
