Farmers' Almanac predicts long winter

Due to this very topic, I am considering a stand-by generator . I have nat/gas so it is doable. We have not had a hard winter in some time, I just fear we are due. And chopping & or hauling wood for the fireplace is now out of the question so .........

Anyone here have one ?

I don't have one, but, I have installed 2 on houses a friend and I built. Both were LP powered as nat/gas isn't around here. Both are wired to start automatically should power go out. Both homeowners have used them and are happy with them.

I have a generator that will power my whole house. Ironically, since I bought it, we haven't had a big storm. I also have a plow blade on my tractor to clear my 1/2 mile driveway out to the county road.

I really feel for the people who have to go out in all that bad weather but I love the winter months. So many people get depressed during that time, I thrive. Long days to get involved in my projects. No thoughts of yard work except to plan my spring garden and dealing with the heat. I've already started a list of my wintertime projects. I call Jan through April my vacation time. Like Aunt Bea I can't wait for the eating season. Pot roast, mashed potatoes, gravy and some red cabbage. The heck with salads.

@Ruth n Jersey I agree. The emergency responders, police, snowplow drivers, all of them. I used to have to do some driving as part of my job, and I hated the winter.
Do you get hit with the Nor'easters? We get a bit of residue from them here, but not as much. We get Lake Effect storms off the Great Lakes.

Marie,we do get hit with Nor'Easters but not like the ones I remember as a kid. Possibly because back then people were snowed in for days, streets were full of snow and ice. I can still hear the chains on the cars clinking down the streets. I actually get a kick out of people today running to the store before a snow storm as if they will have to live off of a loaf of bread for weeks. Usually its all cleared up in a day or two.

We don't have a lot of winter here in Houston. I very seldom wear long sleeves here but do have a couple of nice sweatshirts if needed. The kids here get excited when possible snow flurries are mentioned by the weather man but that's all it is. Would rather have snow than a ice storm for sure. My sister in La. has 2 generators as they get snow sometimes but always ice storms that take their power out.

Well heck... guess I'd better split up some more wood... just in case. :)

It was late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.
Since he was a chief in a modern society, he’d never learned the old tribal secrets. He couldn’t look at the sky to predict what the winter was going to be like.

firewood

"It's going to be a very cold winter."
So just to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared.
But after several days, he had an idea. He went to the reservation’s phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, “Will it be cold this winter?”
“Oh, yes,” the meteorologist at the Weather Service replied, “It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold.”
So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared.
A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. “Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?”
“Yes,” the meteorologist again replied, “It’s going to be a very cold.”
The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.
Two weeks later, the chief called the National Weather Service again. “Are you sure it’s going to be very cold winter?”
“Absolutely,” the man replied. “It’s looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we’ve ever seen.”

“How can you be so sure?” the chief asked.

“Simple,” the weatherman replied, “The Indians are collecting a shitload of firewood.”

I'm hoping for a 'mild winter' here in Buffalo,if we get less than 100 inches of snow {which is our avg snowfall}that would be great
The only times I don't go outside to take my walks, is if its really windy 25mph or higher
If the sidewalks are shoveled,it makes walking alot better. Last yr,I wore my 'Yak Traks' a couple of times

I like the Farmer's Almanac prediction, after the blistering, humid, sweltering, beastly summer we've been through. Nearly every day was in the 90's, with the heat index over 100 many times. I need to cool off!

We got a generator after the 94 quake left us without power for four days. Fortunately the weather was mild that January, even by Los Angeles standards. In the nearly 50 years I've lived in Los Angeles, I've probably experienced fewer than a dozen power outages that lasted longer than an hour. Even outages long enough to cause the clocks to reset to zero are extremely rare - maybe once every other year.

When I lived in snow and thunderstorm territory, power outages were a regular occurrence.

With the exception of one winter in New Jersey when I was 9 years old, I have lived in places where ice and snow are not an issue. Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Vietnam. So I always look forward to getting a break from the long hot summer.

It won't be anything new here...we always have long Winter's but I honestly prefer them to the humid Summer we've had. The only thing that starts getting to me near the end of it is the constant gray skies.

I'd forgotten about YakTraks (shoe chains)...when we lived in the UP we had them...lifesavers for sure. And probably hip savers, too, now that I'm a lot older!

Oh, and your 100" of sNOw? Our average sNOwfall was around 250-300. In recent years it's gotten to be a lot less. I think it's been about five years or so since it broke 200. The only time I miss it is on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning.
