Mardi Gras, a Christian holiday marking the final day before the season of Lent. Often called “Fat Tuesday,” it has evolved into a major cultural celebration. Its traditions emerged in Europe within the broader pre-Lenten festival known as Carnival (or Carnaval), incorporating elements of earlier seasonal festivities associated with the coming of spring. The day is observed on the eve of Ash Wednesday in numerous countries, particularly those with historically large Roman Catholic populations. In the United States it is most closely associated with New Orleans, where it is celebrated with large parades, music, and public festivities.
