I believe in aromatherapy in that certain scents can boost mood and well-being. What I don't believe in is when they suggest that a certain scent is universally calming or energizing for everyone. It's a very individual matter. A bright floral might make one person feel inspired and might remind someone else of a funeral home.
I thought of the topic because of my gloves. I splurged on a good pair when they were on winter clearance. Leather and they smell soooo very good. Perhaps all the people I've hugged at one time or another. The smell of leather and men's cologne together makes me feel terrific.
So just randomly my favorite scents

Roses
Sandalwood
Kenneth Cole Black
Any John Vavartos cologne
Nag Champa incense-the smell of every head shop you were ever in.
Popcorn
Chili- hubby made it from scratch last night and I bet even the neighbors were drooling.
Chanel Coco
An infants neck just out of the bathtub, baby hair in general
Warm kitty belly
Dogs paws-smells like corn chips...really
Angel
Fireplace smoke-reminds me of camping with best buddy and summer in Cape Cod.
Cherry wood tobacco-My grandfather smoked a pipe and middle girl smoked Black and Milds.

What would be your list and why?

Tabu cologne
English Leather Men`s Cologne
Newborns,especially my own
Lavender
Sage
Baking bread
My donkey Jezebel-wet or dry,I love the way she smells

vanilla I use it a lot in certain foods.....baked goods, French toast etc.

Also the scent of my Ladyfriend, no matter what she puts on. Yummmmmmmm

MrsR, you have a donkey? Pics?

I remember Tabu, btw. :)

homemade bread.....mmmmmmmm

Old Spice or Aqua Velva on a freshly shaven man

Beef stew

Bacon

cinnamon rolls

I wouldn't know where to end the list, but many of what has already been mentioned would be on my list including the sandalwood, I used to especially like the sandalwood candles a friend would bring me from their visits to Atlantic City

Something that if I ever smell it, soothes me is Jergens lotion, there's baby lotion/powder, Old Spice just makes me think of my dad from childhood days. Food, that list is definitely too long, ever pass a bakery in the mall and not get tempted, anyone remember Mrs Fields cookie stands, now they have Cinnabon's.

There are several versions of my favorite perfume and they keep changing it, but, the earlier version of Jadore. And one which has sentimental value, Avon's Candid, but there are others I like. Lavender, not my favorite scent, but, it is one that helps me get to sleep.

There is a peanut shoppe downtown....been there 60+ years....torture to walk by! You can get 4 oz of jumbo fresh roasted cashews or chocolate covered anything. They were always busy, esp at lunchtime.

I've always liked the smell of carnival/fair food and hot dog/bratwurst vendor carts.

lavender
rosemary
sandalwood
lilacs
the ocean
turkey roasting
toasted bread
baby lotion/powder
fireplace smoke
cedar/pine
Persil laundry detergent
brownies
Norell perfume

Coffee
Chocolate
Vanilla extract
wood smoke
the ocean for sure
a pine forest
rain on a dusty road
love sandalwood too
garlic bread
daffodils

Yes to the wood smoke, garlic bread and, of course, the ocean, brownies and many others. Gosh I'm getting hungry for things I know I shouldn't have but I could go sit in my favorite chair and just take in the soothing scent of lavender and pass out. I'm seriously giving that some thought, especially, after reading some of the other threads. :D

I'll add the smell of the ocean
A department store cologne department all the beautiful scents mixed in a giant cloud
Gardenia, I adore gardenia. I had a plant that bloomed and survived several years indoors. Next season I have to get another.
Fresh lavender, I grow it every year and prune it. You dry the cuttings and recycle old socks by stuffing them with it. Throw one in every drawer. Fresh lavender is fantastic, they can't imitate it with sprays or anything. Rosemary too, as a plant it's a natural air freshener.

OMGosh! I envy you, I can only dream of growing and cutting my own lavender. Don't think I haven't considered, I think I may have once even tried to grow from seed. I'm sure I got a good laugh out of that. There's little I haven't tried to grow at some point.

April really, lavender is one of the easiest plants to grow. When the Spring comes go to any garden supply. Lavender is usually with the herbs. You want to repot it into a container twice the size of the original so it gets big. Water a few times a week and cut it back when the growth gets more than maybe the length of your hand. Then dry the cuttings somewhere warm for a week or two.

Another scent to recommend-it's by an independent brand Tokyo Milk, Dead Sexy No.6...it smells like vanilla and musk and that you got reaaally happy last night;)

Two strange smells, technically unpleasant smells, that bring back good memories:

Moth balls. Both of my grandmothers kept mothballs in their closets. My grandmothers' closets were full of fun things. I loved my grandmothers. Mothballs = grandmothers.

Diesel Fumes. Reminds me of the three months I spent bumming around Europe as a teenager. All European cities smelled like diesel fumes. Also, the smell of diesel fumes bring back Turkey, where I lived for 2 1/2 years. Diesel fumes = youth and adventure/exotic locations.

Uh huh, I heard the same thing about mint and I killed every brand I tried to grow from plants I picked up. Still, I'm willing to give it another shot. I've only ever had luck with basil.

No mint is an evil plant. It smells wonderful, nice tea, easy to grow. But NEVER put it in a garden. The ************ grows as a weed eventually. Thick ropey vines underground. It spreads and snuffles out surrounding plants. Mint only in a pot unless you want a monster.

I have taken the notes. :)

I know about it's growing habit, still, I managed to kill it, that's what I'm saying, I couldn't even keep mint alive for very long. all my plants were in very large pots so the invasiveness wasn't going to be an issue so much anyway. I couldn't find the pictures of when they had gotten much larger, but this was a month or two after the first pot transplant, I moved them to a larger pot later.

Patchouli
Lavender
Cinnimon
Cloves
The smell after a good rain storm

These are some of my favorites too, but in different order.

1 love cinnamon. It's just the best. I scent candles with it. people think I'm baking goodies.

2 pine - there are lots of pine trees where I live and I've had pines around me my whole life. It's a clean woodsy fragrance that I just love.

3 jasmine or honeysuckle - on warm summer nights, I smell some incredibly sweet floral fragrance wafting around me. It's got to be jasmine or honeysuckle.

4 patchouli - it reiminds me of my youth in the '70s when everyone smelled of this. Like a headshop. ;)

5 the smell of freshly mown grass in my neighborhood on a June morning. There's nothing like suburbia.
