Home made or store bought a well done soup or stew can warm you to your toes:D I just had a cup called "Thanksgiving Everyday" from the local quickie mart-wild rice, turkey.

Sounds good. I do most of my soups and stews in the slow cooker. My favorites are "Let's look in the freezer and fridge and see what I can put in this soup". Made one once and did not keep track of how I seasoned it, and my husband loved it and wanted me to make it again. Could not reproduce it. Oh well

One of my favourites is a local soup called "Cullen Skink" from the Scottish town of Cullen. It's main ingredient is naturally smoked haddock. Of course everyone has their own recipe , but generally it will also have leeks and potatoes , thickened with cream.

(Skink normally refers to a shin of beef or a soup made using it. On the coast, it can also refer to a soup made with fish)

I eat a lot of soup... soup from cans. Progresso... Campbell's Hearty... But, still enjoy it when my wife cooks up a good batch of potato soup. Can't stand chili. Won't eat chili. I'll tell you why, but if you have a weak tummy, I wouldn't read any further....

In 1977, I was working part time as a police office in a small town. Would work my regular job through the week, then put on a uniform and be a police officer on weekends. We rec'd a call that a local business owner was down at his house and an ambulance was being dispatched. When two of us arrived, the man was on the floor and unresponsive. We immediately began CPR. At that time, we did not use masks and we did do mouth to mouth. My partner took the chest and I took the mouth. The gentleman had eaten a couple bowls of chili, gotten up from the table, and collapsed/died of a heart attack. As we were attempting to revive, I got a mouthful of regurgitated chili. To this day, I can't eat chili.

LOL-I had a similar experience with potato soup. Well, maybe not similar but it did take away my taste for it. We were having dinner at our regular Saturday night restaurant one night and there was a party of 6 or 8 across the room. Soups of the day were Minestrone and Cream of Potato. We were sitting there looking over our menus and I happened to glance up just in time to see one of the women in the group drop her head to the side, eyes rolled back in her head and she "lost" her bowl of potato soup. I did feel really, really bad for her. She was out like a light, paramedics came and checked her over (by then she had come to) and pronounced her Ok so she stayed and was able to continue with her dinner. When the waitress came to us and asked for our soup choices,we all said Minestrone though lol.

Aaaand,Grumpy Ol` Man,we have totally ruined this thread. I`ll try to save it.

My favorite soup is just a good ol` homemade vegetable with every veggie under the sun. No meat. I use spicy V-8 along with canned tomatoes for the base-keeps it from being bland. I have to drive around to the other side of the lake to the only grocery store that sells Italian green beans-HAVE to have those in my soup. Then there is kale, carrots, zucchini, onion, garlic, and cabbage. That`s my fave but really,I have never met a homemade soup or stew that I didn`t like!

I make this old standby from the folks at Campbell's

Oven beef stew.

Cut a pound of chuck into cubes. A couple of carrots, potatoes, onions and celery ribs into chunks. Put everything into a casserole with a tight fitting lid, add a 10 3/4 ounce can of undiluted cream of tomato soup, salt, pepper, a bay leaf and a shot of Worcestershire sauce. No need to brown the meat, just toss everything together and bake covered in a 325 to 350 oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

I used to leave out the potatoes and serve it over mashed potatoes.

This is a great way to use up a freezer full of venison.

If you don't like to use canned soup substitute a small can of tomato sauce or some leftover marinara sauce.

I'm also a fan of "Fridge Soup".

They have very good soups down in our dining room, which they also sell by the liter.
My favourite is their potato and leek; which I will also make myself when leeks on
on sale. Used to make many different soups, but now that I am on my own not so much.
The only canned soup that I use is Campbell's cream of mushroom. I also use this soup
in my meatloaf.

That sounds really really good. I never thought of the combination of smoked fish along with potatoes and leeks in a soup. I'm going to have to try that.

The favorite here is veggie beef. Because my husband is diabetic I always use more protein than I would before that. Just yesterday I saw something about stews/soups in the slow cooker, and I had quite a bit of roast and gravy left over from the night before. So I figured it was early so I would give it a try. chopped up the roast, poured the gravy in as well. diced a potato, some pre peeled carrots and an onion. Added a can of mushroom slices with liquid and a can of diced tomatoes. Then I added a bit of corn starch and I was amazed that it turned out pretty good. Next time I will wait a while to add the beef, as it came out very very tender, as far as I was concerned too tender.

Mamas homemade vegetable soup, my homemade chili and Campbell's canned chicken noodle soup........it makes mama roll her eyes and shake her head (I'm kinda used to seeing that :)) but I've been known to eat Campbell's chicken noodle soup room temp., straight from the cupboard and right out of the can.

My son wanted the computer so I couldn't elaborate on "Thanksgiving Everyday". Wild rice, turkey, cranberry and potato in a cream sauce thick enough for a fork...for more or less fast food it was excellent. Anyone in the area of a Quik Check definitely try a cup.

RE Cullen Skink; except for the fish being smoked, it's what we call chowder or fish chowder here in New England.
Change the fish to clams, render a bit of bacon to saute the leeks or onions in and you have New England style clam chowder.

I also like to make pasta fagioli, escarole and cannellini bean soup, lentil soup, cream of mushroom soup and French onion. I haven't made the cream of mushroom soup in quite awhile. Creamy broccoli with blue cheese soup is another one I like to make; it's great with garlic toast.

I don't know Rose, I never had canned French Onion, didn't know if they made it or not. But the canned NE clam chowder is not very good, Progresso brand anyway.

Ah yes, New England Clam Chowder. I've spent some time in Newport, Rhode Island and enjoyed plenty of clam chowder. Strange how much of it was "award winning" and/or "original" . With many dishes like Cullen Skink, Clam Chowder etc .. everyone thinks their's is the best.
