I'm a car guy. There are car guy's, and there are guy's with cars and they are not one and the same. I was of driving age in the mid 60's.
I have to get this off my chest.
Going around to different car meets these days, and even checking videos on the net from around the country and I'm left with one question. When did these car meets become...(Hey, let's look like the grandpa's new car)? Didn't any of the people driving these cars actually grow up and cruise around in the 60's-70's? Who is responsible for pushing the mantra that 50's and 60's cars must look like grandpa just picked it up from the showroom? Or... you must install a 2" lowering kit... or maybe some fake patina. (aka rust)?
I mean, being of driving age in the mid 60's, totally into cars, all I can remember is how the cars looked. Wild paint jobs, straight axle's, or raised spindle's, Gabriel hi-jacker air shocks, L-60's and N-50 tires. Back then, whatever car you got, you hit the junkyards to gather parts. For specialty items, there were very few places where you could just order shiny new parts. Instead, you hiked to the nearest speed shop with hard earned money burning a hole in your pocket and maybe bought a set of mag wheels and a spark-o-matic floor
shifter.
No self respecting gearhead/hot rodder would be caught dead in a stock grandpa looking car, Hot rod guy's wanted 2 doors... 4 doors? that was what your aunt, or one of your teachers, or maybe the local hardware store owner drove.
Custom super cool pre-made interior with console and cup holders? pffft........
All you needed was a decent semi clean back seat, an 8 track player, maybe some organ pipe speakers in the back window, tach (usually a sun) and maybe a big foot gas pedal, with matching high beam tiny foot pedal and possibly a set of side pipes... Then, you were good to go.
Don’t even get me started on fake patina! Patina is a fad that lazy people latched onto.
One last thing... If I wanted to see the latest BMW, Corvette, or jeep, I'd head to the nearest dealer.
