FIREWORKS ' SHOULD THEY BE BANNED ?

Fireworks are fun. They are beautiful works of art against the night sky. Are some dumb nitwits going to blow parts of their bodies off? Well, yeah. But, come on, what are the odds they'd get out of their 20s with all their fingers and toes intact, any way? Fireworks are dangerous, that's why most sane people don't shoot them off. The kiss of danger and spectacular beauty of fireworks is too much of a lure for some, that no sparkler can replace. We love fireworks too much.

I live in a very dry area and brush and bosque fires are a serious concern. Fireworks have the potential of setting fires that can cause millions of dollars in damage and injury and death. Every year some idiot sets something on fire and/or blows parts of their body off.

I believe fireworks for private use by individuals should be banned.

Dumb people and their explosives. Some neighbor teens got their hands on dynamite. Yes dynamite. You knew it was dynamite because the ground and house shook when they set it off. They had the sense to bury it I suppose and watch the ground explode but it ended up bursting the water pipes in the school next door. They started off with bottle rockets and proceeded through all the consumer grade stuff first. Pretty sure it did some damage to their own home too. Had some idiot soak a mattress with gasoline and light it. The explosion from that made the windows bow in and out. No one was hurt miraculously, but people from the next town came to investigate what that BOOM was. The only time a guy got killed was at our neighborhood recycling site when someone brought in an old lock box. Everyone was wondering what was in it so a worker began opening it with a torch. Turned out to be a box of black powder. It blew up in the guys face and he was killed instantly. That was accidental. But a torch? Seriously? We have coal mines all over here. Assume an old lock box might be a powder box. Probably thought there was money in there. Sheesh.

Judy, surely there was police involvement? I know PA is a fireworks legal state. Local cops from nearby states stake-out PA locations where fireworks are sold and follow the buyers home and bust them.

Janet and I saw the fireworks display to end all others:

I doubt the guys on Omaha Beach would agree with that, or those that saw Schweinfurt .
Uh, WTF? This thread is about recreational fireworks, NOT the destructive bombs and shells of war! Gimme a break!

No police in these little knothole towns like mine. People freely do stupid things with guns and explosives. The next generation is entering their teen years so more foolishness to come.

They're "American as apple pie" over here. But I hear constant complaints. They're too loud (especially for pets and veterans with PTSD), plus people set them off in the street and in their backyards, etc. all week long. And during a bad fire season, they usually ARE banned in certain areas. I think they should make a few laws. Don't allow them except on the holiday itself. And invent silent ones. I had to sit on the couch and comfort my dogs all night last July 4th.

They are very hard on dogs. Their hearing is much more sensitive. Fireworks are going out of style now. The local stores don't carry much. Every year an out of town trailer comes in. New Years is popular but not so much other times for civilians. Festivals hire professionals.

It was like a war zone in my neighborhood this Fourth of July! I had just relocated from another state that had banned them due to the extreme fire hazard and I couldn’t believe the explosions going on in a residential neighborhood for hours. I really thought something serious would happen such as an injury or a house fire. I am a lover of liberty but I also believe in the safety of people. Some rules should be applied as to where they can be set off so as not to endanger people and property.

Texas only allows the sale of fireworks for a couple of weeks before July 4th and before January 1. Cities have the option of banning the sale and/or use altogether. Seems about right to me.

Fireworks have been banned here unless you have a permit. Bonfires are definitely illegal.
When I was a kid we celebrated Empire Day with both and I would accumulate my stache of fireworks under my bed in a little school case. Dad would build a bonfire in the back yard and friends and neighbours would join us in the celebration. After Christmas Day, it was my favourite day of the year.

The smoke generated by all these backyard fires and crackers, as we called them used to closed Sydney Airport for several days. Eye injuries were common and some people had fingers blown off.

Quite sensibly the state government brought in laws to curtail this public nuisance and now there are much larger displays in public parks and most spectacularly of all, in and around Sydney Harbour.
