Fireworks.....

Every night now after 11 pm and sometimes as late as 2 am they are setting off fireworks. I think that is kind of inconsiderate to those who are sleeping and have to work tomorrow.

I used to go down to Edgewater Park to see the fireworks then got tired of the long lines to the park and the crowds of people. I used to enjoy the show, though, on the 4th of July.

I feel sorry for the pets who get very frightened from the fireworks. When inside my dog or bird can hear them but it doesn't phase them. However one 4th of July the year after I got her my dog and I were sitting outside and someone set off some fireworks that I thought were pretty but my dog got scared to death and I had a hard time holding her and taking her back inside. I never took her outside at night on the 4th again, needless to say. A lot of dogs run away on that night if they are outside. It's very sad.

What is your take on fireworks?

You're right regarding many animals, dogs especially. Some of them become terrified and will run away if not chained or leashed.

Personally, I enjoy a good fireworks show and we usually set off some at the cottage/lake in Maine. It;s in the woods, only half a dozen cottages, and everyone participates. Shot out over the lake, they are beautiful (and noisy). We leave our animals home with relatives for our July visits.

Yeah, they are especially beautiful over the lake--I've seen them there, too.

My dog Rosie is 10+ years old. She is a Beagle Terrier mix. Scared to death of any loud boom, from storms to fireworks. My Vet gave me some "calming" pills to give her. Only 1/2 tablet & it sure calms her down & she does not shake & hide in my lap.

So if you have a dog that gets scared talk with your vet they can help. Especially now that the 4th is upon us.

When I was a kid it was, yay firecrackers, on the 4th of July and then we were done with them. Here there are certain immature, adult people who buy enough 4th of July fireworks to set off the rest of the year. They finally run out after blowing up New Years Eve. Not a fan.

You're right, Tom. I'd forgotten how thunder would also frighten most of our dogs, over the years.

Where we are, it seems like the fireworks and firecrackers in people’s yard (or in the street), keep getting worse each year. It starts well before the 4th of July weekend, and lasts for however long it takes for the people to run out, maybe not until New Years, some years.
The people who do not have firecrackers go out and shoot their guns, so there is always a lot of noise happening for the whole weekend.

We usually try to make sure that we are stocked up with food, etc, and then stay home for the whole weekend. My little Poodle is terrified with loud noises, thunder , fireworks, gunshots. The first one he hears, he looks at me to be sure that I know what has happened, and when there is more, then he is jumping up onto my lap and stays there until it is over.

I used to love fireworks when I was a kid, but it was a fun thing and not so much of a dangerous thing back then. The only fireworks that I remember seeing when I was growing up, were the awesome display put on each year by the city.

I enjoy the professional displays.

On the 4th I’ll be able to watch one from my bathroom window if the sky is clear.

We have some odd local laws for firework sales. You can buy firecrackers, sparklers, etc... but you can’t buy Roman candles, chrysanthemums etc... There are still plenty of illegal sources of those more dangerous items.

I always worry about fire or injury for the people in the neighborhood that use them.

Where I’m located it seems like the people that can afford them the least tend to spend the most.

Like Deb pointed out it will be over soon.

They are illegal here, but so are open fires, but nobody does anything about it. Laws are only as good as they're enforced. The problem in reporting is if the offending parties find how who reported them, they can make your life much worse than a few firecracker noises, especially if they know you're an older person.

Last summer I had noisy neighbors who had a fire pit and loud parties until the wee hours. I don't see the lawn furniture or the fire pit now. I'm sure it would be out by now if they were still there. It's a five-unit apartment house and people come and go all the time and I wouldn't know. Or maybe they got caught by, or reported to, the absentee landlord and got their marching orders. I can only speculate.

We have to leave our home every 4th of July weekend (or the days before and after) and also NYE because the illegal fireworks in our area make it sound like what I would expect a war zone to sound like. Our one dog gets extremely upset with the explosions so we take our dogs out of the area and usually go camping where fireworks are not allowed.

Another thing to consider is that fireworks sometimes set off PTSD reactions in veterans.

I'm not a fan of fireworks in the neighborhood .... and once the fireworks stands open up, they shoot them all hours of the day and night for several days.

My dogs never could stand the sudden noise if they were outside. Inside, not as bad.
Years ago I bought thunder shirts for them - anxiety soothers. I think they work fairly well.

I have the thunder shirt for Rosie for when storms come in. I also got some calming pills from my Vet that I use before night storms or fireworks with the thunder shirt so she won't get so excited from now till July 6th.

Our County only allows fireworks from July 1th to the 6th. Then again from Dec. 29th to Jan. 3rd. People are learning because if the police/sheriff catches them on other dates it's a $500.00 fine.

Course we get people from out of state that brings in fireworks a week early to be with relatives.

Last night, about 2AM, some of my neighbors celebrated June 28th- a historically significant day-they had fireworks left over from the historically significant day of June 27th. My AC was humming away, so I didn't hear anything. Made a BR run. I did have cats before, and the got scared at holidays, by all the fireworks. But now, any day is a celebratory fireworks day, even Christmas. BTW, we're not talking sparklers, we're talking big time fireworks shows. They have to be costing a bundle.

Grew up with fireworks. They're not as much fun when your my age as when you were a kid; however, I don't begrudge people enjoying them for a day or two. As for fireworks being dangerous, the chances of your getting injured or inconvenienced by them is far less than that from, say, a car.
