First snow !

Having a power outage in cold weather is a real bummer. When we moved to the boondocks, one of the first things I bought was a portable generator....6500 watts. It's not strong enough to run the electric furnace, stove or water heater, but it keeps the fridge going, gives us lights and TV, and runs the blower on the outdoor wood furnace. Luckily, we've only needed it a half dozen times over the years, but it is sure some good "insurance". 3 or 4 years ago, a bad ice storm took down the power lines, and we lost power for almost 24 hours....had several neighbors over to warm up and take a break from the frigid weather.
 

Our main house furnace broke down today it took a while for the engineer to get here so for a while I was quite popular in the garden carriage house..nobody had to snuggle up to me though!!
 

Field opposite the house full of wild geese at the moment, arrived yesterday.

Not unusual, but the first time this winter. Not sure if they're seeking an early return to Spitzbergen, or just expecting hard weather!

Quite bad on the mainland at the moment, more than two dozen dead.

First significant snowfall here and it is depressing, but a good martini brought on visions of spring...
 
I have only seen the merest fall of snow once in my life.
It does snow inland on the Great Dividing Range probably every second or third year, and some people drive up to see it, but we haven't
I did go to UK for Christmas one year, but temp was around 55F and it didn't snow.
Anyway we are having a heatwave now, and I can't even imagine how it is to live with snow.

The Blizzard of 1979 was no exception to Chicago’s tendency to be walloped in white every decade or so . It snowed for nearly three days starting late on January 12, . Almost two feet of snow fell.
