It is a good article, and Switzerland a good example of a country with lots of safely held guns. I used to go to Geneva for business a lot and got to know some of the Swiss, we talked about their guns. One reason for this is that for a long time every adult male was in the Swiss military, reserves. All had to have guns, and be trained in their use. The idea was that should anyone try to invade a large army could be mobilized quite quickly. It worked, keeping Switzerland out of WWI and WWII.
Swiss guns are very tightly regulated. The article points some of this out, for example:
Hunters and sports shooters are allowed to transport their guns only from their home to the firing range — they can't just stop for coffee with their rifle.
By US standards the Swiss live quite regulated lives, I am not sure how well this would work here. But it is a good case study to consider.
