Floating House?

This is a new one on me. I just watched a piece on TV about custom-built houses in Vancouver, built on water. The house actually moves around, so the view is constantly changing. The program followed a couple who put a deposit on a house & they watched it being built & they explained the process.
The house is kept afloat by large reinforced styrofoam squares encased in cement. I imagine that design prevents "That Sinking Feeling."
All the supply & discharge pipes are encased in those squares. The cost was around $650,000.00. Not bad for a nice 2-story house.
I wonder if the price includes lifetime seasickness medication.

Floating House?

The Dutch have been leading the way with floating houses for a number of years now. They have a real need. I briefly looked into it after our Florida home was so badly damaged in a hurricane, but decided against. Maybe I shouldn't have.

They are also a lot of them in Venice, Louisiana. Probably the most flooded and flood prone place in the US.

In Venice the houses are in areas relatively protected from waves and the houses are designed to just rise with the storm surge. Seems to work... sometimes.

Why not build a water proof house that would simply rise up as the water rises?
It could be tethered so that you could control how high it rises according to how high the water rises.

We have two nearby variations of this in Sausalito, California, which borders San Francisco Bay. First there are houseboats, basically barges supporting a small house, tied up on docks designed to house them. That‘s ok, but what isn’t ok is the “anchor outs” - generally good sized sail boats with cabins housing itinerant sailors. There is an ongoing campaign to get them to sail somewhere else or tie up at a dock.

BTW - That was a Sausalito dock in the 60’s Otis Redding song, Sitting On The Dock of the Bay.

Saw that movie. Loved it! Also saw "Houseboat" movie with Sophia Loren and Cary Grant.
