This is Lexie, who was just a mutt, but easily the smartest dog I've ever encountered. Photo taken in September 2020 at Lake Catherine, near Hot Springs, AR.
We were fairly certain that this outing would be the last for her. She had contracted a mast cell tumor, which resulted in amputating her left foreleg a day or so after this outing and after a lot of back-and-forth with the vet.
We stopped using that particular vet for not just this incident, but two others involving our parrot and another dog. They couldn't even get the IV started with Lexie, which caused her pain. Thinking about that vet pisses me off to this day.
Amputating her leg was a huge mistake, because that decision took the life right out of her. It wasn't long after this photo was taken we had to put her down. The cancer had spread and she just wasn't the same dog.
Lexie came to us as a stray. She was only 7-8 months old when a pack of stray dogs, of which she was one, wandered onto our property in Missouri. We managed to find homes for all of them, but kept Lexie because she had such a calming effect on Belle, our golden retriever. Lexie was the consummate adult dog, even as a puppy. Watchful, observant, compliant with humans, and provided canine guidance to Belle, which we appreciated.
