For The Love Of Dogs

DSC09086.JPG

Time does not take them from us all at once. It softens them first. It grays the muzzle, slows the step, and deepens the eyes until they seem to carry every quiet morning and every loyal glance they ever gave us.

In the morning light at Fort Sofa, Mason still stands the watch. Not with the energy of youth, but with something steadier. Ownership earned over years of simply being there, faithful and loyal, each and every day.

Almost fifteen years is not just time. It is a life lived steadfast in one place, beside one person, in a way that turns an ordinary spot on the couch into something permanent and lasting.

Some forts are never meant to fall. Long live the boy dog, Mason.

That's a beautiful tribute for Mason.

My little Dachshund is slowly wasting away this, her 16th, year, down to six pounds from her usual 13lbs, almost deaf, just about blind with cataracts, but still large and in charge. Yesterday my son was about 30 minutes late getting home so she barked for 30 minutes. Then he came home. It works every time.

She's with me every minute of the day and sleeps with me at night. I'm bracing myself for losing her, but it's going to be truly awful.

The little 3 1/2 yr old spaniel/havanese mix is a very "active" dog. She irritates the old shih tzu to no end, seeks attention all day long, and keeps me hopping.

The other day, a friend came over and brought her blue heeler. I know this dog; she is the same way, typical heeler type. The two got along fine, had a barkfest outside with the neighbors' dogs, ran around the yard together.

Yesterday, my little one was very quiet, laid around, to the point where I checked to see if she was sick or ? Late in the day, I asked her, "Do you miss "X"? Her head popped up and she looked right at me! I think she misses her new buddy? Maybe we should set up play dates.

Yesterday, two baby birds must have failed at their attempt to fly or they fell out of their nest? IDK, but the little spaniel found the first one and was violently trying to get it. It was in a thick section of bushes and dog was furiously digging so I intervened to see what was going on. The parent birds were flying low and doing their best to scare the dog away, which is what got my attention. Couldn't see a nest anywhere nearby so I moved the bird outside the fence but it was too injured and died.

Then the dog found the second baby bird but it was able to fly a little bit. Managed to grab it before the dog did and placed it, too, outside the fence. I don't know how it ended up.

Now, whenever the dog goes outside, it rushes to those areas, on the hunt. Mother Nature can be cruel.
