Foreign Students Cheat More Than Domestic Ones.

Fox News. Now there's a good authoritative source!

Actually we find the same thing over here, but since most of our foreign students are English, American or Canadian the language excuse doesn't hold up!

Actually they cite a Wall Street Journal article.

Actually I would imagine something is skewed here. Many immigrant students are often better educated than their US counter parts. Why would they need to cheat save for a language barrier?

Learning a subject & foreign language at the same time is difficult in itself. One might be able to learn foreign languages or be bilingual and/or 'good' at something like math but can they learn & master two things at once. Going to a foreign university is overly romanticized in many circles. Some have few options for advancing their education although I suspect many are there just for their resume and a job, just like American students.

Studying in English (for foreign students) is common, so Americans have no excuse.

Any statistics on cheating in general from your region? Not doubting American students cheat. For decades business majors frequently lead the cheaters in US colleges.

An older study but up to 60% of polled college students admitted to cheating. Many cheaters do wind up with higher GPAs. Plagiarism is a big issue as well.

Goodness no. It is highly forbidden to carry on any study in Sweden, based upon nationality, race or religion. I was just going on personal experience. Actually, the Americans aren't so bad compared to the Russians. They cheat as a matter of normal behaviour. There was a Russian woman in one of my classes who had her handbag on the chair next to hers during an examination. Her handbag was open and a text book inside of it was also opened to the page regarding the subject we were being examined on. She was calmly thumbing through the thing looking up the answers and she didn't care who saw her. Finally the examining monitor caught sight of her and swiftly snatched the handbag and put in on his desk at the front of the class room. She got really anger and told him, "It is not right for a man to look into a woman's handbag!!!" During the years afterward I realized that Russians cheat as if it were a normal thing to do! I wonder if "open book" is the only sort of testing used in Russia?

I think many groups ethnic, foreign jump on a bandwagon they are not equipped to ride. This is why complete assimilation including language and things like not cheating need to be emphasized. Life in a more formal but freer society is not like life in really impoverished or repressed countries where cheating or getting away with as much one can is more acceptable. There are rules. Being foreign, poor etc is no excuse for not being law abiding or ethical.

In some respects regardless of country the same human traits of selfishness, ambition, greed, deceit can affect anyone which is why giving people a pass isn't always the best choice even politically correct.

I agree with everything you say. I think however, that these are not the same times we once lived. Presidents cheating to get elected, lying about WMD's in order to invade, rape, torture, and murder a million innocent men, women, and children ..... and never once apologizing for it .... has given the latest generation of homo sapiens a different perspective on what "respect, selfishness, ambition, greed, deceit" really mean. And I have to agree with them that the facts prove that you and I wrong - on all counts. That's a kick in the ass, ain't it!

Yes. Of all the foreign students I have found that Russians and Americans are the worst offenders.

I was wondering what the outcome might be when North American students go to other countries for their education. Did those schools find that 'foreign' students were worse for cheating?

Were you a teacher Verisure? Or have you read an article somewhere that discussed the issue of foreign exchange students?

I think it probably is a normal thing as a result of decades of Soviet leadership. When there was/is so little, probably the only way to get by is to cheat. And let's face it, the Soviet Union was not that long ago and while many things have changed, I'm pretty sure that attitudes don't change as quickly as systems and particularly if some aspects of the original system haven't even changed all that much. At least that is what my thinking is.

I was a substitute language teacher for secondary school. But what I said about Russians is based upon experience when I myself was studying various complimentary courses. It seems that much of their“knowledge” from home was gleaned from babooshka gossip and they are really superstitious. Breaking a mirror might keep them absent for days for fear of some tragedy happening if they leave the house.Someone ought to write a book on it!

You're probably right about the Soviet System, Debby. There are many positive things about it but there are also many negative aspects from its corruption. My wife is from Slovakia, born during the then Czechoslovakia, and I have been to all but one Communist European country. Everyone had a job, and in fact it was illegal not to have one. But the highly educated were privileged by the right connections. Yes, the farm boy could become president but only if he had the right political background. Just look at Khrushchev. If I remember correctly he was illiterate until his teenage years, although the legend goes that he was 25 by the time he learned to read and write. Anyway, fate, superstition, and the right political connections seemed to have more to do with their lives than down right studying. I guess cheating didn't make much difference.
