Some from the French port city of Marseille say the cruise liner industry is causing pollution and an increase in cancer rates since a cruise industry boom. They think the ships idling in port with engines on are part of the problem. Studies say cruise liners account for 10% of their air pollution.

I just read in Cruise Travel magazine that the cruise lines are taking first steps to convert to natural gas. Marsielle could make shore power available and then the ships would be able to shut down their diesels.

There was shore power on the naval base in Virginia in the 1950s.
 
Could be. But they'd have a hard time proving it, since the article also says that Marseilles has a heavy pollution rate due to road traffic and industry.
