Pareidolia is thing our brains do because they are trying to 'make sense' of the world where it imposes on what are usually random naturally occurring things something that has more meaning for us (animals, human figures and/or faces). Faces are the most common, because facial recognition is important for mostly social animals like humans.
We don't hike as much as we did in Wyoming, because we have 4.9 acres of mixed terrain including some small hills right at home. But a few years ago we got the urge one spring day and headed for the mountains, which are even closer now than when we lived in Laramie. We came upon several large trees that likely had been downed and laying on the ground for sometime. One of them presented the shots below to me, which i find amusing, but they are also good examples of pareidolia.
The last one seems to view me as annoying paparazzo.
