Funny or deadly serious?

I have to send this article to my son. My grandbaby was on FaceBook before I knew he was born. They photograph their food before they eat it...My one bumper sticker reads "1984 was a warning, not an instruction manual". I don't even have a cell phone. Big Brother is out there fer sure
 
Deadly serious and not funny at all. We are being tracked for various reasons in the stores where we shop, and with "smart" meters in our homes. Anything labeled "smart" is not smart at all for those of us who cherish our privacy.

From what I understand, Smartphones and SmartTVs have recording devices that may record conversations even if the object is in the off position. I have an old flip-phone, with no GPS, camera, internet or recording capabilities. I didn't buy it for that reason years ago, I bought it because it was inexpensive and suited my limited needs, now I'm happy not to have the more involved gadgets.

I'd rather pay a little more for my car insurance, than put something like the spy box in my vehicle to get a savings on Progressive car insurance. I don't like the idea of being monitored in any way by any strangers for any reason. I have no interest in the newer "On Star" GPS systems that come with some new cars now. I don't want any stranger in a far away location having the ability to lock and unlock my doors and windows, or pinpoint exactly where I am or have been.

I know that Google and Amazon track everything you search and the ads for that product or service follow you throughout the web. I belong to a couple of forums, and sometimes I might research something for a friend or neighbor online, and I will be targeted with endless ads pertaining to that item or subject as I surf the internet. There are search pages like Startpage, that is more private, but not as convenient and good as those like Google. I've heard bad things about gmail, the user's incoming and outgoing emails can be reviewed by Google (or anyone they want to give it to), including all attachments, etc.

This all is creepy to me and an unnecessary violation of privacy rights. Fureverywhere, I like your bumper sticker, couldn't agree more!

The whole article boils down to results which were imminent as a result of the "Information Age", which is bringing ever-more control of the masses into the hands of ever-fewer leaders. Today's "state of the public status-quo" may explain why, in it's infancy, government chose to not "quash" the Worldwide Web. I distinctly recall reading of just such consideration being discussed at highest levels. It easily could have, and followed up by jamming any future disallowed wireless use not controlled under auspice of the Federal Communications Commission.

My belief is that the wisest scientific advisors foresaw two significant advantages which the "Computer Revolution" would bring: Enormous economic and company growth, as well as personal, wealth, and, nearly irresistible control of great masses of citizenry without much violence. Just M.O. imp
 
Deadly serious. "They" are spying on us. Of course, it's for our own good, don't you know?

Many years ago, I read a science fiction story in which every human had a device implanted in their ear. That device gave the masters complete control of the person. They were more or less robots. I forgot about the story until the last couple of years when I began seeing people walking around with devices in their ears. They seem to be totally oblivious to their surroundings almost like robots. We are being mind controlled by our electronic devices. If you are in any doubt, turn off your TV, cell phone, computer and other devices for one week and see how you feel. I'd be willing to bet a small amount the no one of you could go without them for a week.

I see that a lot Shirley, people out in public are in their own little world. I have one desktop computer, no other devices. Flip-phone has no internet access, and I've been without devices for a few weeks at a time when we go camping, we usually can't even get in a radio station where we go. Been without them on longer trips when we were younger, didn't miss much but the TV and hot showers. :eek:
 
I meant to tell y'all this, too.

Some time ago, my TV was going bad. For thirty minutes or so, everything looked to be in slow motion. I could see words in pale lettering behind the actual pictures. Then it stopped working completely. In regular motion, the words would not have been visible.
 
Now that Sea has brought up camping, I guess, I can say, it's really possible for me to be without those gadgets for a week or more, I really hadn't thought about it like that, I used to do a lot of camping till I moved once again to Florida 5 years ago. So guess, I wouldn't be doing anything I haven't done in the past. I for one do enjoy human contact when it's with people who's company I enjoy or just enjoying nature, excluding animals that might pose a danger. I only go so far with the back to nature thing.
 
This is an interesting concept that you've all brought up - doing without.

Personally I could do without everything - except my laptop and the Internet. TV? Take it or leave it, and with all the commercials I could easily leave it. Haven't listened to a radio in years. Like Sea, I have an old-school flip-phone that only does what a phone is supposed to do. I don't have a car.

I don't even use the timer on my coffeepot.

So yes, I would only miss the Net, but I would probably get over that in a week or so, even without a pedicure. The only problem is that my income, meager as it is, would disappear. I've chained myself - and my work, most of it anyway - to the Net.
 
In some cases, tracking certain individuals is a good thing, at least for public safety it is.

I have no problem with the authorities checking me out from time to time as long as I am not living in East Germany behind the Berlin Wall under the Stasi. However, I am very happy that the Australian Federal Police are actively monitoring radicalised Muslims and their opposite counterparts the United Patriots Front. It is better to head off trouble than to mop up the blood later.
 
Regarding the opening article, strangely ;), I'm reminded of Edward Snowden and his concerns and also reminded of something I heard about one day (now?) having to be careful not to talk too much in front of our televisions....

A criminal is only a criminal after he or she has committed a crime and been convicted.
People plotting a crime, alone or as part of a conspiracy, need to come to the attention of the authorities before they have a chance to kill anyone.
