Probably, and it was one of the few movies that I have watched twice. "The Crying Game" was another great movie about a tranvestite, though hardly a comedy, that took place in Northern Ireland during the British military "police" action there...
 

"A Man of No Consequence" was also a very poignant movie that could certainly change some thinking...
