Going off topic ?

Staying on topic works for most because most are linear thinkers, I don't fault those that aren't. The example of discussing pigs lips somehow going to big knockers would be a radical change. I could see where that could evolve into wrapping lips around big knockers. Going from a unique food to a unique attempt at the impossible might seem reasonable to a non linear thinker.

Is there really such a thing as a serious discussion? Is whatever is posted as "serious" going to change the world? Expressing an opinion about events in a open forum may open someones mind to an alternative thought so as Martha Stewart would say "That's A Good Thing".

Short answer It doesn't matter to me, I post to try to keep the old grey matter working.

Staying "on topic" is the tenuous goal, in order to promote clarity and continuity of a given train of thought. Closely related thoughts give the discussion breadth, and eventhough strictly speaking are off-topic, nevertheless still contribute to the discussion.

What is unforgivable is if the thread topic is "my garden is doing so well....", and somebody barges in the thread and mentions "what bums" the NY Mets are.

Know whatta mean?

...I find it very annoying when two members start off-topic one-on-one conversation in other member's thread. ...
This is the only type that bothers me. Otherwise it's easy to get back on topic, but somehow I feel like I'm interrupting when this happens.

Indeed. Then their buddies chime in and end every sentence with "lol". Also, some people are very needy; they like to think they're more amusing that they actually are, and their buddies 'cheer them on'.

That's what I meant when I referred to a free-for-all AOL chatroom. Remember those?....late 90s.

we should remain on topic, unless there are a huge number of replies, then maybe the topic is covered.
Making stray comments unrelated isn't fair to the OP.
In academic and professional forums the rules are stricter.
If you have nothing to say, why write you have nothing to say--?
The same happens in real lifeand I have held numerous group discussions
and usually the first few people to respond are on target, then the others stray.

Oh please don't remind me of the people that jump in when you are telling a joke.

Doesn't usually bother me at all, as that's the way human conversation takes place. No topic is ever stuck to permanently, we'd all die of boredom.

But I have to admit that I find it a bit annoying when I start a topic, earnestly expecting a heartfelt discussion about it, and within a few notes, somebody has hijacked it. So I guess it depends on whether
it is "my" topic or not!

Pigs feet? After witnessing what they step in? No thanks.

So I guess you'd also pretty much rule out chicken feet ?.......I tend to "go native" so I've eaten them several times while working overseas and they are pretty darn good, they are more of a snack than a meal.

The most meat is the pad on the bottom of the foot and you always clip the nails off before cooking and eating.

Folks go off topic in my threads frequently and it bothers me not one bit! As long as they are enjoying others and wander off topic, big deal...
