Good News: McDonald's Just introduced its first-ever Vegan burger.

There is increasing demand for plant based (vegan) foods. As someone who moved to eating a plant based diet nearly 8 years ago (for both ethical and health reasons), I know many others who've embraced this eating choice, and even more who've increasingly shifted to eating meatless meals.

People shift to veganism for myriad reasons - and only the purest of vegans would insist on a separate grill. In any event, McD's grills are scraped down between burger grilling batches so it's not like the vegan burgers would be swimming in beef suet. (I worked at a McD's during college years and know whereof I speak.)

All that said, Beyond and Impossible burgers aren't particularly healthy choices, but they are at least a non animal flesh option. McDonald's is responding to consumer demand. Glad to see it.

Thank you!

Humans have been killing/eating animals forever, and will continue to do so. I tried one of these "beyond meat" burgers a few weeks ago, and didn't notice much difference between it and a regular burger. I suppose its a bit more healthy, but we don't eat at these fast food sites very often, and we maintain a fairly balanced diet that seems to be working, so far.

The Main thing, IMO, is to follow a good regimen of diet and exercise, so as to stay fit, and reduce the excess body weight. Given the Obesity Epidemic that is sweeping the nation, anything that reduces that is a plus....and if vegetable burgers help, that's a good thing.

Burger King continues to offer the Impossible Burger throughout the US. Not sure what you're getting at.
My bad. I read that the Impossible Burger sales were horrible for 2021. I assumed that they were withdrawn because of the lack of promos. My error. They are just not selling- from 2020:
Burger King's largest United States Franchisee, Carrols Restaurant Group said that in the start of 2020 Impossible Whopper sales dropped nearly 13% which means that about only 28 to 30 Impossible Whoppers were being ordered per day whereas the original Whopper orders stayed steady with at least 230 per day. Oct 8, 2020.
In 2021, the Carrols Group reported only 4% of sales were from Impossible Burgers.

I will not be trying it. My sister and her husband have a contract with Kansas City Steaks to provide quality beef for their products. They have plenty of land and water to make it happen. It amazes me how well my BIL takes care of those animals before they go to market.
Always gives me a chuckle when I hear how well animals are treated........before they are killed.

From the article:
"The new burger has launched in partnership with the US-based, meat-substitute brand, Beyond Meat, and is made from plant-based ingredients including yellow peas, coconut, potato and beetroot juice. What's more, it's topped with vegan cheese and a vegan sandwich sauce."

and Beyond Beef's ingredients (as on their site):
"Water, pea protein*, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, rice protein, natural flavors, dried yeast, cocoa butter, methylcellulose, contains 1% or less: potato starch, salt, potassium chloride, beet powder color, apple extract, pomegranate concentrate, sunflower lecithin, vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, vitamins and minerals (zinc sulfate, niacinamide [vitamin B3], pyridoxine hydrochloride [vitamin B6], cyanocobalamin [vitamin B12], calcium pantothenate).

*Peas are legumes. People with severe allergies to legumes like peanuts should be cautious when introducing pea protein into their diet because of the possibility of a pea allergy. Contains no peanuts or tree nuts.
Quite a lengthy ingredient list, compared to their regular burger; "Ground up dead cow." :giggle:

Animals omit methane gas plants don't. Humans are animals. Methane gas pollutes our air. Conclusion: "Launch all missiles."
Result: "Ah, smell that air."

Burger King had a veggie burger. They had a huge mega million $ roll out ad campaign. I think they sold 3 veggie burgers. Today, the Whopper is still all veggie burger free.
And then there's the locations that have so few requests for veggie burger, the staff doesn't even realize it's there... Stopped at BK one time (nameless location in deep South), asked for the veggie burger.

Rec'd a hamburger roll with pickles, tomatoes and lettuce

I am not making this up, really! lol

If sales were so terrible McDonald's wouldn't be stepping into the vegan arena. Before adding items to their menu they do plenty of testing.

Vegan/plant based and vegetarian restaurants are quite common in NYC and So Cal. Nearly all restaurants in these areas offer plant based meals on their menus, veggie burgers included. They'd be quite foolish to ignore the growing number of people who eat this way. If only one person in a party of six eats vegan but the restaurant doesn't have plant based options, the entire group chooses another eatery.

For clarification - many long-term plant based eaters (myself included) are not a pain in the a$$ at parties or restaurants. I've yet to find a restaurant or household that doesn't serve SOMETHING I'm comfortable eating. My nephew refers to me as a practical vegan because I don't make a fuss.

Indeed, my friends are more cautious about choosing restaurants on my behalf than I am.

I'm glad for more choices! Burger King has been our first fast food choice since they launched the Impossible burger, we get one of those for my vegan son, a regular double Whopper for my carnivore husband, and a chicken sandwich for me. I like the fish sandwiches at McDonalds so now we have that option, as well as Subway and Taco Bell. So long as restaurants stay open that is.

I remember McDonald's used to have comic books for kids to read while families were eating there. To solve the problem of kids asking where hamburgers come from, there were drawings of hamburgers growing in hamburger patches. :giggle:

Ugh, I wouldn't want my choices limited by family business, do you feel like you are betraying them if you eat chicken nuggets at McDonald's? If they later switch to growing soybeans would you limit yourself to soy-burgers? I'm not against supporting relatives' businesses, but I wouldn't be willing to give up food choices. Well, unless I had family that sold pizza, I might be willing to only eat pizza. Or ice cream!
