Was looking through some old stories and found this: the four-year-old is now thirteen

A couple weeks ago my wife was making plum jelly, (which is just about the best made), she had the next door four-year-old (granddaughter) helping as usual, she had dipped the spoon in the mixture and was holding it up to see how the texture of the sauce was. The four-year-old says. “That is just how my mother does that. You do it just like my mother…… (little pause) …..that is because you want to be just like my mother when you grow up, don’t you grandma.”

A favorite story we bring up about my niece (who's 42 now) took place when she was about six.

We had boated to an island to spend the weekend and it was about a quarter-mile walk to get to the cabins. She was carrying a small bag and was keeping up a constant stream of complaint, "I'm tired....my feet hurt...this is too heavy...I'm hot....I can't walk any further....etc.".

I had finally had enough and snapped at her, "_______, give me your bag and I'll carry it!"

"Oh, thank you, Aunt J. It's just so hard to walk and complain at the same time!"

We've never let her forget that. Whenever she starts complaining about something, someone says, "Oh, are you finding it hard to walk and complain at the same time?"
