'Granny Pods' Allow Grandma to Live in Your Backyard
When families are faced with finding a place for grandparents to live out their golden years, the options can be complicated. Full-service nursing homes can be costly and don't always make the most financial sense. The steep fees paired with the guilt some families feel about an aging loved one living alone often leads to Grandma or Grandpa moving in with their adult children. But if home size or lifestyle won't allow this arrangement, what next?

Looks like a good idea all around. She could have a pet and do her own chores if she is able instead of having no good nurses baby her to death. She could go for walks, etc. When she passes the kids could move in temporarily when they visit.

we always ask our son with DS if he wants to come help with the yard work, he always says, no thank you.

The Amish call them Daadi Haus or Grossdaadi Haus.

Some are small detached homes and some are inlaw suites in the main house.

We have a few around our area. The towns around here let you build on your property but when the people living in them pass the structure must be removed. I would love an arrangement like this. The only problem I see with some of them is that the little bedroom is up in sort of a loft and can only be accessed with a ladder which isn't very practical for older people.. I haven't looked into all the designs because my daughters home is very large but with not much of a backyard.

I doubt "Granny Pods" are going to catch on. When I think of the nightmare just getting my septic system approved, you are not going to get another fully functioning home approved on most lots. Easements and all that legal and regulatory stuff. There's the cost of building it, taxes, etc. The Amish have tons of helpful teenagers to help the older ones. Our elderly are mostly left alone during the day. having been in one, I'm not a fan of nursing homes, but realistically, what option do most of us have in caring for our elderly.
