I am a retired Septuagenarian that just discovered this interesting forum and I look forward to participating.

Welcome, Lon,

I'm also new to this forum, and from what I've seen I think we're going to enjoy the camaraderie.

You were kind enough to answer my post about cataract surgery for my mom, and I answered your post on my thread, however, I have a couple o questions and so will ask them here, too.

If you don't mind telling me, what kind of laser was used in your procedure--we're considering LenSx from Alcon. Also, were you sedated, take Valium, or what. Only share this info if you want; otherwise I'm grateful you told me of your success with laser. You've greatly reassured my mom and myself.

I did not have Laser. Here is the procedure that I had.

Eye drops were used to numb the eyes and a eye holder was used to keep the eye from blinking

A very small incision will be made and a tiny ultrasonic probe will be used to break up the cataract into microscopic particles using high-energy sound waves. This is called phacoemulsification.
The cataract particles will be gently suctioned away. Then, a folded intra-ocular lens (IOL) will be inserted through the micro-incision, then unfolded and locked into permanent position. The small incision is "self-sealing" and usually requires no stitches. It remains tightly closed by the natural outward pressure within the eye. This type of incision heals fast and provides a much more comfortable recuperation.

Don't mean to intrude, but THAT's EXACTLY how ours were done. (My wife and I) No sweat, no discomfort and

have had NO problems since. It's been some 10 or 12 years now. Still 20:20 vision but now need reading glasses.

Hi, Lon,

Gosh, I don't know why I thought you said laser. Probably time for me to step back a bit from thinking about it.

Before I do, may I ask did they sedate you into a drowsy, dream-state with sedative called Versed, and/or give you a Valium, or were the numbing drops the only meds you were given?

One doctor we've talked to wants to go the Versed/Valium route, and another doctor wants to go Valium/eye drops only. We're leaning toward Valium/eye drops.

Thanks a lot for your help. This info is going a long way to helping us make up our minds, and the encouragement from you and others is really helping.

Hi, Falcon,

You're not intruding. How about you? Do you mind telling me what kind of sedation or meds they gave you? Thanks oh so much.

Falcon,

Thanks, it helps greatly to know you had good experience and success. I talked to our Doctor today and he was very encouraging. I'm starting, after all the comments here, to feel much more hopeful.
