Grey hair

OK, so I admit it - I've been coloring my hair for a few years now to hide the grey. Now I'm going to let it come in but know it's going to be ugly with roots one color and the rest of it another. Does anyone have any helpful hints on how to let nature take it's course while avoiding the ugly root situation?

Maybe it might be better to dye it grey and have it over with in one shot??

If your hair is a lighter color you might try getting it highlighted until it grows out. That kind of softens the effect. I let mine go several years ago, but that was just shortly after my hair started getting serious about turning grey. I liked my hair color so I always colored it as close to my own natural color as possible, so growing it out wasn't too noticeable.

If you dye it grey and you still have a lot of natural color, you will have the same problem of roots growing out. I don't know how hard it would be to cover color with grey. ...boy, this aging process is not easy.

You could wear a hat for the next year...no one would notice your roots.LOL

I like the hat idea, may just be the way to go!!:)

In the land of bald heads, the gray-haired person is king. ;)

Hats are great - in fact, I'm due on eBay to find a replacement for my beloved Kangol cap -

Of course, YOUR tastes may vary.

I still dye my roots, and I'm not ashamed of it at all...but is is a hassle. I would grown mine out, but hubby likes my color, and doesn't want me to do it, unless my health deteriorates so much that I can't manage anymore. Honestly, I've been fooling with hair color since I was a teenager, so turning grey really didn't make any difference, no new rituals due to getting older.

I almost always did it at home, as I didn't have extra money to go to the beauty parlor (hair stylist). I remember the painful plastic cap for doing your own blond highlights back in the day. It hurt enough pulling the hair out through those holes, but then removing the cap once the gunk was on your hair was really ouch time, lol.

I worked with a gal that decided to grow out her grey, and for a long time it looked like she was wearing a little silver skullcap. I inquired at a neighborhood hair place about dyeing hair grey, for those who wanted to grow out their hair, and she said that there was no grey coloring available at all, only black, and that would really show the grey. I also have so much grey now, that it wouldn't be just highlights if I grew it out.

I think if I was ready to go grey, I would choose the lightest color that was near my own, and maybe highlight with platinum streaks. Like if the hair is brown, choose the lightest ash brown color, etc. At a salon, they can also remove the color you have, and start from scratch with a very pale color all over. Along with mild highlights, I imagine that would be the best way to go. I hate wearing any hats, so that wouldn't do it for me. :p

What hair? And I hate wearing hats! Will have a 50th high school reunion in a couple of years and planning on wearing a beautiful LONG blonde wig. I was voted funniest in the class, after all . . .

I've worn hats since I can remember. I love hats!! In the summer I have those big wide brimmed hats to keep the sun out and in the winter, I like the ones that look like a skull cap. Fedoras are always nice for that "dressed up" look. Hats it will be for me, until at least my hair is all one color.

That's good TICA if hats work for you! :) I imagine the shorted the hair cut, the quicker the process also. My hair is shoulder length or longer, so it would take a long time for me.

I think dying your hair gray and then letting your hair grow in gray will be the best solution. This will cover the multi colored hairdo. Also, people can get used to your gray hair color even before it fully grows in.

Tica, why not try a lovely fresh short haircut. New style, new look and then the grey doesn't take as long to 'take over'.

I did that about ten years ago because I got fed up with colouring it. And as long as you're not a smoker, that grey can be a nice colour too.

Good advice from Seabreeze and Debbie.I think I would go with the shorter hairstyle [not too short] and the platinum highlights while it's growing out.
