I don't know how it is for others, but I find that
where I live, people with Grey Hair become invisible
to others in shopping centres, others walk into me
young women seem to have trouble steering their
buggies around me, prefering to stop till I walk round
them, or they "Sorry" and just push one causing me
to get out of the way quickly.

Sometimes when I speak to a shop assistant, especially
in an electronics/TV shop, they raise their voices and
emphasise their words as if speaking to a child or to
somebody who is not able to understand the things that
they are trying to sell, or what they are trying to explain,
I have on several occassions had to ask them to stop
raising their voice.

Maybe I am being too harsh and over sensitive, but this
is how I see it.

Do any of you experience similar actions or is it just me?

Refuse to be invisible and ignored. Assert yourself! If some young whippersnapper speaks loudly, give 'em a withering look and tell them in no uncertain terms that you can hear just fine and your mind works quite well. Sometimes you just have to embarrass "youngsters" into treating you with the same respect as they would anybody else.
 

I'm white-haired but don't have this problem except in electronics shops.
Being invisible in these shops has been a problem for about 25 years now,
however, this could be a female only problem,
 
As some would know we went to Perth a couple of weeks ago for a short trip, We caught a public transport bus from the airport to the city , half way there a couple of Young women got on the bus both with a small lightweight stroller and demanded I stand up so they could put the strollers where I was sitting , which is clearly marked for seniors and disabled
I refused to get up as I would have had to walk to the back of the moving bus for a seat, as it happened they just wanted to sit and have the strollers out in front of them. I'm 70 next year

Maybe part of the problem is that some of us seniors tend to unintentionally fade into the background? We've heard so much that seniors aren't listened to or acknowledged so it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. We assume it will happen, therefore we act like we're 'less than' and subsequently we get treated like that.

I'm pretty sure that some of the folks on this forum (who are grey[ing]) walk tall, walk proud and don't experience the same thing you've described Mike.
And then too, there are droves of people who are just plain rude in society these days as manners seem less and less important as the world fills up when in fact, the more people on the ground, the more important it is that we behave respectfully to all.

Good for you Kadee! Pretty rude of those women but you know, I think that overt rudeness is kind of becoming a norm sad to say.
 
I had dinner with a fellow "grey lady" last night. She was telling me that older women are now in vogue.. I think she meant younger men are "into" a more "mature" woman.. I find that hard to believe, but she swears she has young guys hitting on her all the time. I don't know exactly where she goes for that to happen.. but she swears it's true.. She's a nice looking lady.. but she is STILL 66.. and grey.. Anyone else here fighting off hoards of young whippersnappers?
 
Oh, sure. Happens to me on a daily basis, QS. Mmhmm. Young dudes with six packs so well defined that they can be seen through their shirts. They just will NOT leave me alone because of my stunning beauty, steel-trap mind, wittiness, charm, effervescent personality and the fact that I'm unbelievably fashion forward. They just cannot resist.

There's nothing quite like a young guy with a hard bod wearing tight pants. It's why I like to go to Braves games:)
 
Yesssss! Hussy! I'm not just a garden-variety hussy, either; I'm a shameless hussy. One of the perks of advanced age is that we can say and do pretty much anything we want to. I always wanted to be a shameless hussy:)

I think that Debby is right, it's more of the general lack of manners today than anything else.
 
Plus.. Americans, at least Americans today, do not have the same reverence for the older generation.. at least not like Asian cultures... There the elderly are respected and looked to for wisdom.. HERE... they think we are children. and don't understand things like they do..and something to be ushered into nursing homes and retirement villages.. It feels like they want to be rid of us.. for our jobs.. and our assets.
 
I experience the opposite, find people offer to help me too often. I smile and say, "No thank you, I am fine"...but, find it annoying. Though, a week ago when my car broke down, I was very happy when a young man not only stopped to help me...but, pushed me off the road. Then came back to check on me several times, even bringing me water. BTW Two days ago I colored my hair blond. But, still I am an old lady...so do not know if that will solve it.

Actually it apparently IS true...it's been going on for a few years now..I've certainly had my fair share of guys 20 plus years younger hitting on me...and I remember reading about this phenomena in the media a while back. Apparently older woman are called cougars by younger men...and this link here gives you an insight into why we're being hunted..apparently..
