"Governmental reports from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that there have been 1,516,863 gun-related deaths since 1968 (included suicides)."

Is there some kind of fact checker on gun deaths in the usa?
I had always seen a figure of around 10,000 per year, but the 31,000 deaths per year figure takes it to a whole new level.

And it may be soon when one looks at the conflicts we have got ourselves involved in that are escalating as old ones crank up again...

It would be interesting to know where this "NY Times" article Really got its numbers. I just went to the CDC site, and they report that the number is closer to 11,000 firearms related deaths....or about 3.5 per 100,000 population. While this number seems quite high, when compared to the global numbers, the US is actually somewhere around the 90th most dangerous (firearms related) nation in the world. Some of the South/Central and African nations, for example, are far more dangerous than the U.S.

A large number of gun deaths are suicides. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2013/05/24/suicides-account-for-most-gun-deaths/

Suicides by gun accounted for about six of every 10 firearm deaths in 2010 and just over half of all suicides, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since the CDC began publishing data in 1981, gun suicides have outnumbered gun homicides. But as gun homicides have declined sharply in recent years, suicides have become a greater share of all firearm deaths: the 61% share in 2010 was the highest on record. That year there were 19,392 suicides by firearm compared to 11,078 homicides by gun (35% of all firearm deaths). The rest were accidents, police shootings and unknown causes.

In terms of both raw numbers and population rates, gun suicides have been on the rise in recent years, even as gun homicides have fallen. In 2010, the gun suicide rate was 6.3 per 100,000 people, compared with 3.6 per 100,000 for gun homicides.

At 87%, males are the vast majority of gun suicides. By age group, people 65 and older have the highest firearm suicide rate: 10.6 per 100,000 people. Read more

When you take Suicides, and Drug and Street Gang related gun incidents out of the equation, the average responsible person living in a stable neighborhood, has very little to fear from gun violence in the U.S. The average person is far more likely to reach their demise in an auto accident....especially with the recent rise in fools playing with their cell phones while driving.
