Gun legislation, a "what if" scenario

Yes, but again, what would they expect to find out by all that expensive research? We are back to finding out what? That guns in the hands of those who do not know how to handle them safely are dangerous? That guns in the hands of bad guys are dangerous? That most people who shoot themselves have access to a gun? What? IMHO, just getting more statistics doesn't help anything. How 'bout we have somebody other than the CDC figure out how to stop illegal weapons from coming into the country, or how to prevent crazies from purchasing weapons, or why our background checks don't find the crazies? That would be money well spent.

I am no expert here, but I suspect that the CDC would want to have a better understanding of the causes of gun violence/deaths I think with any problem of this magnitude, the more info you have going in, the better prepared you are to offer solutions that will work. I'll draw a parallel. In my former life I was a manager of a large department. Like any institution, there are processes and procedures. Some work better than others. We formed a task force to look at one particular problem that was hurting client service. In order to solve the problem, we had to understand the root causes. I suspect that's where the CDC would like to go here. They want to prevent more deaths/injuries by understanding what's causing them in the first place. You can't offer meaningful solutions without having all the facts.

Let's say that there's a new, unknown, deadly virus. It's killing almost everyone who contracts it. The CDC comes in and collects data. Who catches the disease, where is it most active, are there some folks who don't get it, etc. Once they have info they can make recommendations to prevent you from catching it. Think about the AIDS epidemic in the 80s. All they knew was that this disease was killing (mostly) gay men. They didn't know how the disease was spread, what precautions people could take, etc. They collected data so they could then make recommendations.

Hope this makes the issue clearer. It's but one thing that might help in an overall huge problem in our country. It's not a solution, but it's the start of what might help come to a solution.
