A 12-year-old boy was killed after gunmen on jet skis (!) opened fire at a beach in Cancun, authorities said, marking another incident of deadly violence at a Mexican resort in recent years.

Mexican prosecutors said in a statement late Sunday that the gunmen were targeting a rival drug dealer on the beach and fled after the barrage of bullets. Apparently, they were engaged in a dispute over drug sales.

The boy, a local resident, was apparently lying on a lounge chair on the beach with his family when he was hit by stray bullets. The boy was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Territorial disputes between drug dealers have cost the lives of several tourists in the resorts along Mexico's Caribbean coast in recent years.

Cancun and Tulum are 2 of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. These cartels have ruined the country. No wonder some of those illegal immigrants cross the border. Their homes are too dangerous.

Some of the biggest cartel heads are in US prisons now but it make no difference; others take their places.

You're normally safe if you stay within the confines of the resort in Mexico but apparently; not in this case when they're shooting from the water . It's a shame as tourism is a huge revenue source and provides great jobs for thousands of locals.

I have only been to Mexico on a cruise and took a tour booked through the ship. Much too dangerous to visit otherwise. It’s really a shame.

I agree that this is terrible, but I don't think this is the only reason the people that live there are leaving the country. I believe the fact that they have some pretty nice handouts waiting for them here in the U.S. gives them a bit of incentive to get here.

Maybe Mexico's gov't will finally crack down when their beach resorts start losing millions of dollars every year and unemployment hits a new high. Too much to ask, probly, but it's reasonable to assume resort hotel and restaurant owners pay "protection money" to the cartels. They don't want that revenue to dry up, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do their own justice and *punish* the jet-ski gunmen and whoever coordinated this shooting.

Unless people just keep visiting this delightful country in droves. >sigh<

Criminals will often offer up a "fall guy", usually a young weak gang member to be the 'sacrificial lamb' in order to keep the heat off from the cops.
