Gunmen open fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

Donny, yes, the police in Australia have guns and obviously the army does and politicians may have armed security at some times, I dont know - certainly not most of the time though - and the rich and powerful don't have any more need for guns than rest of us. Why would they?

obviously farmers have guns and licenced hunters and people in pistol shooting clubs - they don't just carry them wherever they go though, they use them for their legal purpose and keep them locked away rest of time

So if the Government can have them. Why can't you?

Because it is the elected government's job to protect its citizens why would the citizens need to be armed?

Both the state government and the federal government admit to failures at Bondi and both are taking firm and quick action to remedy that failure.

The NSW Government is sitting as we speak to pass suitable legislation, it has said it will sit on Christmas Day if necessary to get the legislation through both houses.

I see they want to strengthen speech laws and gun laws. Sounds like a good plan. I wonder what type of speech they will prohibit and who gets to decide. Well good luck. Almost like England where things are going just fabulous.

Do the police have guns? The Army? Do the politicions have armed security? The rich and powerfull?
Yes, to each question. So do some criminals. Domestic violence is a serious problem and corporations don't pay their fair share of taxation. Crime gangs are often at war with each other and they sometimes shoot at each other.

Even so, I can go to sleep at night without locking the back door and I live on the outskirts of a very big city. I do not regard sensible restrictions on gun ownership to be an infringement on my civil rights.

So if the Government can have them. Why can't you?

You can. If you have a legitimate reason and you apply for a gun licence and you meet the criteria.

Some people in Australia do have guns - but they use them for their intended purpose, not just carry them round everywhere they go.

No doubt the exact legislation will be published very soon, it won't be perfect and if enough people object the legislation can be changed, that's democracy for you.

Protest, gun laws won't stop Invasion Day rallies, NSW Premier says
