While I believe we have a good country to live in, and we were at one time a very great country, I don't believe that's still true. We are $34 trillion in debt. Our school system ranks quite poorly in comparison to other countries. Here, you can get the most expensive college education, not necessarily the best. Most of the other advanced countries offer free or nearly free college education. Why isn't college an extension of the public school system—elementary school, middle school, high school, university, or trade school?
We have no national healthcare system, and the minimally affordable insurance (ACA, "Obama Care") is under constant attack from conservatives. Medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy here. Why do we pay so much more for prescription drugs than Canadians do? They come from the same companies. Hint: think profit and a nice return for shareholders. Nice for the wealthy that can afford to invest.
Homelessness is rampant; many working folks can no longer afford a home and probably never will be able to. They will be destined to pay exorbitant rent for the remainder of their lives.
We have one of the highest rates of gun violence in the world. Just a few months ago, other advanced countries were warning their citizens not to travel to the U.S. due to the violence.
Here in Florida, the governor just eliminated the free lunch program for schoolchildren living in poverty. He also passed a law making it illegal for people (think homeless) to sleep in public areas. I wonder where they will go. Much of the legislation treats a symptom rather than a problem. For example, the government pays off school loans. What happens to the next generation of students with loan debt? Wouldn't a better solution be universities that are not profit centers?
We have a good country, but I don't believe we still have a great country.
May I ask, what makes you still believe our nation is great?
