Actually, nothing is going to beat the year that we set off the smoke alarms in the hotel at our 40th birthday party. You know the old joke about all the candles setting off the smoke alarm? It's true.
The party was in a suite on the 7th floor of a hotel at the beach. My sister had put 40...count 'em...40 of those self-relighting candles on the big sheet cake. We blew them out and they relighted, producing a lot of smoke. Blew them out again and they relighted again, more smoke. Rinse and repeat. Huge cloud of smoke. Set off the smoke alarm. We threw a wet towel over the cake and ran it out onto the balcony, but the damage had been done.
The smoke alarm going off automatically alerted the fire department, who dispatched a truck. The hotel could not stop the fire department from responding. The firemen came and determined that there was no fire and shut off the alarms. The call cost the hotel $750 and they.were.not.happy. We were invited to never darken their doorstep again.
We ate the cake anyway, soggy icing and all.
Before you ask, yes, alcohol WAS a factor.....
