I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t realize the UK had their own day that’s different to ours or at least I may have but forgot. Anyway Happy Mothers Day to all of you in the UK. You deserve this and then some.

It appears to go back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who worshipped their 'Maternal goddess' as part of their spring festivities.
The modern British "Mother's day" has no direct connection with the American one. It certainly goes back to the 1600's in the England. Originally, it would have been the day when people made a pilgrimage to their "Mother" church, and later when many young women worked as domestic servants, it was a day when they were allowed to go home and give gifts to their mothers.

I'm afraid that I'm a cynic when it come to these things. Like other festivals, it has become commercialised and yet another way of relieving people of their money. It's just another day in the Lightning household.

I didn't know Mother's Day was different than ours so Happy Mother's Day to all who celebrate today.

In Britain, from the 1600's it was a religious festival linked to the date of Easter, hence it changes every year. It had nothing to do with mothers, but to the "mother church" as opposed to the local parish church. This evolved into allowing domestic servants to visit their families so that they could worship together.

If my info is correct, Mother's day didn't become an official holiday in the USA until 1908. Interestingly, it's founder Anna Jarvis, became very disillusioned by the commercialisation of the festival and at one point was arrested for protesting against it.

I didn't know the UK celebrates on a different day either. (When is Father's Day?)

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there!
