Harsh Winter Coming?

I was just reading the prediction for this coming Winter from the "Old Farmers Almanac", and it doesn't look good for most of the country. I trust this Almanac more than most sources, as they historically are usually about 80% accurate. If their predictions are true, only Texas and Florida may see anywhere near a mild Winter....the rest of the country may have some real challenges.

Locally, our fairly mild Fall is about to come to an abrupt end tonight...major cold front coming in. I just talked to my Sister in Denver, and they are in the midst of a major snowfall....8 inches so far, and still falling.

Soooo....get prepared.

Hi Don,I've read this yr's winter forecast in my 'neck of the woods' here in Buffalo/WNY
It sounds like another frigid winter with 'lake effect snow' going to 'snow belt areas' south of the city where the bulk of the snow goes every yr.This is where all the ski resorts are located
In some yrs,the almanac has been wrong with its prediction e.g.three yrs ago,we only had 1 inch of snow for all of Dec. I'd like a 'mild winter' for a change, not over concerned about it

Back in the early ‘90’s, my wife wanted to go see the Falls at night with the colored lights being shown on them. We stayed at the Foxhead Hotel, (I think). Why would anyone want to go to Buffalo in January? It was supposed to be a 4 day trip.

Long cold winter with above-average precipitation, below-average temperatures, and a late spring are predicted for my area.

I had the studded snow tires put on a couple of weeks ago. I also keep an eye on the ten-day forecasts so I can stock up on groceries ahead of a bad stretch of weather. Maybe this will be the year that I begin testing the grocery delivery services in my area.

I don't really mind now that I'm retired and can normally pick/choose when I venture out.

Yep, hunker down, Aunt Bea!

Anyone interested in long-range weather forecasting (or any other type of forecasting) should read The Fortune Sellers: The Big Business of Buying and Selling Predictions.

It covers several topics of prediction besides the weather:

- Economics
- Weather (including the Old Farmer's Almanac)
- Financial services
- Population
- Technology
- Futurists
- Business planning
- Fortune telling

As I recall, the conclusion is that it's all a sham -- nobody can predict the future beyond the odds of a coin toss.

But that book was written 20 years ago.. perhaps we're a bit better at it these days...:D

Never have much of winter here in the Clear Lake Houston area. Sister in La. gets worse weather as does daughter in Va. Daughter loves the snow she gets but hates the way people drive. They don't know how to drive in it.

Finally, somebody, who knows what he's talking about. Tommy. Some of you think you need fancy scientific gadgets to predict the winter, or use that old wives tale book, the Almanac. That stuff is all a bunch of......... It's the wooly caterpillars, who are the true predictors of winter. Jeesh. Everybody knows that. It's a little early for the woolies to start predicting. So, from the advance data from wooly labs across the planet, we know winter will be cold and at times quite snowy, in the usual parts of the world that get cold and snowy. You heard that here first.!!!!!!!!

And the woollies also tell us: "The northeast will experience several inches of snow and temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees during the last week of January 2020."
