Harsh Winter Coming?

After a very hot couple months, we are now getting a cold spell, and might see 30's tomorrow. Very abrupt change.
Not surprised by any weather events anymore.

Hot Summer ? haha......well we might of had it a few degrees higher on certain days......
I thought, it was a summer of odd days again....
At least we know where we are with Winter !!
Well I dunno where you are Charry, but we had 90 degrees for weeks and over 100 deg on a few days.. we didn't see rain for about 8 weeks..

I'm so glad I left Connecticut in 1977, these last winters have been severe in the Northeast.

Early chilly blast. Coldest Halloween for a couple decades. Cleaning out the fireplace to get ready for new fires. Sure hope that Farmer's Almanac is right and we have a "pleasant" winter!

We're in Co. and I've been shoveling for a couple of days now. We had a couple of inches last week, now between yesterday and today, I think we had a total of 8 more inches. Today the sun is back out, so although temps were 16 degrees, it felt more like 26. Shoveled walks are melting and drying nicely. We had a short fall, but I'm good with winter as long as we get breaks between snowstorms, and we usually do.

@fuzzybuddy I was going to mention those caterpillars, but you beat me to it. I agree, we do have to look at nature. And out own joints. LOL. My knees have been killing me since the weather has turned colder.

Predictions: I've been living in western NYS all my life and the winter of 2013-2014 was the coldest that I ever remember. I've been living in this house since 1982 and for the first time I had a hard time keeping the living room warm enough in the evening (I heat with coal). I had to wear big wool hunting socks to keep my feet warm because the floor was so cold, week after week.

For weeks the temps were in the teens or less during the day, often dropping to 5-10 below zero at night. Those temps aren't unusual, but they were unrelenting for weeks -- which *is* unusual.

Then in 2015-2016, we had the mildest winter since probably '82-'83, the last "El Nino" that I remember. Thanksgiving Day 2015 was sunny and mild (in the 50s as I recall). The winter was mild and we had very little snow.

Easter 2016, March 27, was sunny and in the 60s. That, in itself, isn't unusual for late March, but usually when it's that warm it is often windy too, and brutal cold weather and storms follows. But not this time. Little to no wind, bright sun all day, beautiful sunset, no storms.

At any rate, I don't recall anybody forecasting any of these extremes.

Sure hope the Farmer's Almanac is right...it says PLEASANT for this area. Cold and us don't get along well...lol.

After the daily 104 degrees through the summer, I try not to complain about my winters. It was 50 now when I put out the trash, I think it was 39 earlier. The promise of winter is what keeps me here during the hot summer.

Just love getting up at the crack of dawn and going walking ...NOT!:ROFLMAO: ..... can hardly wait for tomorrow morning. BRrrrrrrrrrrr
You got that right...tomorrow is supposed to be colder than today! Time to cover up tender plants. Its says 30° here tonight, yikes!

Hey, if I felt the way you do I'd move up north...lol. Lots of cold up there. Can take the heat a lot better than the frigid cold. Got A/C house & car & swimming pool & flip flops & shorts!

The cold front that hit Denver came through here last night, and we got our first dusting of snow for the Winter. The temperature was 26 degrees when I got up, but the sun is out, and temps in the upper 50's forecasted for the next few days, so hopefully the lingering cold weather will hold off for a bit longer.

Squirrel's nests aren't that high this year. So winter won't be that bad. Squirrels have a special bone in their skulls so they know what's comin'. Right?

Sure hope that Farmer's Almanac is right for this "home sweet home" area...says it will be PLEASURABLE. We can take that any day of the week, huh!

Does anyone know, what are the Farmer's Almanac predictions based on? Does real scientific research go into those predictions?

Here's what the web says:

The Old Farmer’s Almanac Long Range Weather Forecasts show deviations from normal temperatures and precipitation amounts, based on 30-year rolling averages gathered by government meteorological agencies, specifically NOAA and Environment Canada. The averages from 1981 to 2010 are the latest available data; these numbers are updated every
10 years.
